They say that everything looks small during the shell construction phase, but with the atrium it was actually the opposite. The more finished it got, the more I wished I had made it bigger. There is supposed to be an L-shaped lounge sofa in the corner opposite the tree, with sides measuring 2.50m (8 feet 2 inches), but I’m a bit worried that it might look too crowded.
I’ll share a picture once everything is finished. My plan also includes a permanent table (with benches) there
(currently 4m (13 feet) wide, minus insulation,)
I already measured this once on the plot (the space on the right side of the house will be an extension) and thought that 4m (13 feet) is quite narrow.

I like the atrium solution. To me, it acts like a central light-filled corridor with a convertible function. Depending on the arrangement of the surrounding areas, the atrium is not only a design feature but also a communicative architectural element. Have you planned for double circulation routes depending on the season, or do you use the atrium as a connecting space year-round? In principle, it could also be used as a connecting space in winter, but that is unlikely. Since it is an outdoor area with sun protection, it is cold and wet in winter. Also, constantly opening and closing the heavy lift-and-slide door is more tiring than simply walking around.

hampshire30 Apr 2021 12:30I am well aware of the disadvantages of an external connection. We built separate, self-contained living units for our boys, but still live together as a family. The connection is via a shared south-facing terrace. Wet socks do happen sometimes 🙂. The advantages far outweigh the downsides: The boys can have visitors whenever they want (currently only restricted due to the pandemic), and we don’t have any strangers in our area.

Strahleman8 May 2021 07:39Now that the plastering is done, we are installing the underfloor heating ourselves. You really know you’ve accomplished something by the end of the day 😀
Unfortunately, the hallway in the basement didn’t turn out very well, but since it’s not a living area, it’s not a big deal. So far, all the heating loops are between 75m and 85m (82ft and 93ft). However, one loop has to be removed again today because the pipe is kinked at one point. But practice makes perfect, and we have plenty of extra pipe in reserve 😉
Even though things didn’t run smoothly at the beginning, we’ve been on a roll the past few weeks: the drainage can now be routed outdoors without a lift station, directly by gravity drainage (saving us nearly 10,000 euros), the plaster is of excellent quality (we ordered Q2, got Q3), and once the screed is installed on Tuesday, we can check this off the list.

Please also remember to protect the pipes around the door areas.Yes, we already have the slotted corrugated pipes on site. I planned to install all of them during the last inspection. I forgot about the basement though; the staples around the door area still need to be removed there.
