Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

a) why not wood?

Because eventually it ALWAYS looks suboptimal—unless you REALLY commit to maintenance.

But I’ve never really seen that happen...

That’s why I always get a craving when I see houses with exposed wood... they eventually ALWAYS end up looking like shacks...

Because you either have to treat it regularly to keep it looking nice, or it will weather and turn gray, which some people don’t find as attractive. It’s a matter of personal preference.

I think the gray color looks quite nice. It is natural and does not affect durability.
What does not look good is when the paint starts to peel.

The wood remains natural; the "beautiful" look that seems to be desired or expected here does not correspond to this natural state. For me, this natural appearance is exactly what is beautiful, but tastes clearly vary.

I’m also considering building a wooden deck all around the house (but also up to the entrance level). Thanks for the inspiration on how it could look.
Here is another example for inspiration. Larch wood is used on the south side. It continues around the house on the west side (background in the photo) and ends before the terrace by the kitchen door. On the east side (approximately this location) it also wraps around the house and connects to the driveway/carport, the path to the front door on the north side, and the walkway down to the garden area on the slope. The width varies between just over 1 meter (about 3 feet), nearly 6 meters (about 20 feet) where there is seating, and 3 meters (about 10 feet) in the foreground in front of the children’s windows. The sloped terrain requires fall protection.

Wood house with terrace, glass fronts, seating area, two chimneys, forest behind.

But from my point of view, there is nothing against using WPC… I just thought about it: the grill deck is now over 10 years old and after a quick brushing with clear water (no chemicals or anything) it looks like new again...
WPC is an extremely durable material and offers clear advantages when it comes to cleaning. Artificial turf, by the way, retains its color more easily and does not need mowing, and Etap Hotel demonstrated that plastic walls in bathrooms have cleaning benefits. I simply don’t like these plastics, even though they sometimes have superior properties. Irrationally, I feel more comfortable with more natural materials.
