Anything that is beautiful, unique, and away from the standard is not cheap. As a builder, you can write that in big, bold letters on the shell of your house.
@Obermuh: really turned out great! Standard is no longer cheap either nowadays 😀

It already looks quite special, but honestly having four sliding doors seems a bit overkill, especially since the interior spaces aren’t separated.
Is it closed at the top? How is it ventilated? Is the house air-conditioned? It’s open at the top. The house is partly air-conditioned, but the plan is to keep the atrium open during summer, which is why there are four lift-and-slide doors. Also, the preferred walking path in summer goes straight through rather than around the atrium.
Ideally, at least that’s the plan, the open atrium acts like a chimney, drawing fresh air in through the exterior windows and letting it out at the top. So far, this works well with shock ventilation, but we still need to see how it performs when it’s 30°C+ (86°F).
The roller shutter consists of two sections and can be operated via home automation and a sun position sensor to prevent direct sunlight from blasting through the glass.

Basically very cool, but I would have put more effort into the hole where the planter with the tree stands, or at least made sure it was placed straight. We tilted it slightly so the tree is straight. Basalt stones will be placed in and around the planter to make it look nicer, which will also hide the unevenly cut floorboards 😉 I couldn’t lift the planter with the stones out of the garage alone, and I was too lazy to go back and forth multiple times… that’s planned for next weekend.
The planter is intentionally a bit higher than the terrace so we can put a rope sling around it to lift it out.

I’ll have to rethink my solution (only three sides; one side open) with 4.8m*4m (15.7ft x 13.1ft) and maybe reduce to 4.5m (15ft) width. They say everything looks small at the shell construction stage, but with the atrium it was really the opposite. The more finished it got, the more I wished I had made it bigger. We want to put an L-shaped lounge sofa in the corner opposite the tree, with a side length of 2.5m (8.2ft), but I’m a bit afraid it will look too crowded.
I’ll share a picture when everything is finished.

Depending on how the surrounding areas are arranged, the atrium serves not only as an architectural element for aesthetics but also as a space for communication. Have you planned for dual circulation paths depending on the season, or do you use the atrium year-round as a connecting space?
