Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Only exterior roller shutters on all four sides

At least considering this idea can be quite obvious with ETICS / cavity wall construction. This could actually lead to a "revival" of this option.

We mainly wanted this because it provides easy access when working on something, because no renovations inside the room are needed afterward, because there is no passage to the interior, meaning no animals can get through. And also because we like how it looks.

I think your setup actually looks pretty good.
In general, for new builds, I would lean towards using surface-mounted boxes. They work with any type of construction, as long as the window isn’t floor-to-ceiling. Plus, an external or bottom access panel allows for maintenance without causing damage, even if it’s a bit tricky.

My "why?" question was actually directed at @11ant.

Do you mean the roller shutters outside the window or the surface-mounted cassette box?
By interior roller shutters, I would understand shutters that are lowered inside the room.
That would be quite unusual and especially disadvantageous for heat protection...
So I actually can’t imagine that.

As you can see in the picture, they probably mean exterior roller shutter boxes.

You would be right that having blinds behind the glass would be pointless for heat protection.

Because—at least if you choose the rounded version—the roller shutter box can be installed completely outside the structural wall layer. That might make some homeowners consider this originally "modernization option" for new construction.
