ᐅ Problems with furnishing the hallway – any ideas?

Hello everyone,

Today we started thinking about furnishing the hallway. The room is large but has many doors, so it’s not that simple.

Here is the floor plan. I hope I didn’t miss any important details. No tall cabinet can be placed in the top right corner. At least the upper part of the wall should remain easily accessible because the fuse box is hidden there. The heating circuit distributor is located in the lower part, but it doesn’t need to be accessed very often.

Floor plan hallway: front door, bathroom, light switches; doorways; access panels/fuse box.

What do we want to accommodate?
- Coat closet for 4 people long term
- Storage for shoes of 4 people
- Drawers for small items like scarves, hats, shoe care products, bags...
- Bench for sitting
- Mirror, preferably full-length

I’ve looked at various IKEA hacks for building something like this from Metod, Platsa, etc. It would be best if everything was from the same system to keep a uniform look, but IKEA is not a must.

My plan is to have a bench along the left wall, tall cabinets at the bottom right, and a chest of drawers at the top right. Unfortunately, my husband doesn’t like this because he thinks the space on the left is wasted. However, I don’t see how there could be much cabinet there without making the passage to the bathroom too narrow. He would prefer the chest of drawers closer to the front door to put keys and such down immediately.

Since we can’t agree, I need your help. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

At the bottom right, three tall cabinets measuring 60cm (24 inches) each for jackets, and on the left, half-height wall-mounted cabinets acting as a sideboard. Unfortunately, I realized that a 2.40m (7 ft 10 in) long bench is a bit too much, and I don’t like the look of different cabinet heights at all. Then there would be space at the top right to create a seating bench from two low wall cabinets measuring 60cm (24 inches) each. This wouldn’t block the flap above and can easily be pushed aside when you need access below.

But that means you’d be zigzagging quite a bit through the large hallway when getting ready to leave. I’m guessing you want the bench to put on your shoes?

You could create a combination on the left wall with a sideboard for shoes and a seating bench, where the sideboard visually rests on the bench, which then clearly extends on one side for sitting. Basically like in the picture, but nicer and adjusted to your space.
Then place the cabinet on the bottom right, as you suggested. You could also swap this arrangement: a great cabinet on the large left wall and the shoe storage right next to the door. This has the advantage of keeping dirt right by the front door without spreading it further into the hallway.
In front of the access panels, you could install a large wall mirror that might even fold away.

What bothers me about all these ideas – including mine – is that all the furniture lines the walls, leaving the center of the large room completely empty.

That also bothers me a little about the layouts, but unfortunately, there’s no way to plan everything “all in one spot.” I need to look at more examples of a bench with a chest of drawers beside it. Yes, the bench is meant for putting on shoes, especially for the children we’re planning for. I also don’t think the bench in the back corner is ideal.
We’ve also considered planning something in the middle, but I can’t really get comfortable with that idea.

No idea if the dimensions fit here, but we modified an Ikea Kallax with four compartments and laid it flat: added feet underneath and placed a nice wooden board on top for sitting. Then we added two more shelves inside the middle compartments to fit more shoes.

I haven’t read anything yet, but I would close off the entire right wall with a built-in wardrobe and leave out the back panel where the technical installations are, creating the passage with a flush door.

Brilliant... perfect solution, plenty of storage neatly integrated. Should have thought of that myself.

I’m a bit worried that it might look too bulky if the entire right side is filled with tall cabinets. What do you think?

It’s really difficult to find enough storage space for everything. How do you manage that? For two people, I need space for jackets (1.5m (5 feet)), shoes (currently 3m (10 feet) of shelves, and that’s already tight) (mostly my partner’s!!!), a shallow roll-out drawer about 1m (3 feet), drawers for scarves and similar items, probably another 1m (3 feet), a few spots for bags, umbrellas... And eventually, things for kids as well.
