Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

I don’t think you can really say it like that. We have anthracite-colored porcelain stoneware tiles with a slate look (I can’t recall the exact name right now. We built 15 years ago). Despite hard water with lime content, stains are barely or not visible at all. Dark spots are noticeable if coffee or another liquid spills on the floor. However, the floor looks almost the same right after mopping as before. Not everyone might like that. It’s simply matte and never shiny.

We made the mistake of choosing very dark tiles for the shower...

It is always nice when sunlight hits dark tiles at an angle, revealing beautiful patterns of lime deposits and dust. That’s why I prefer lighter tiles and wood.

However, it does not only depend on the color shade. Solid colors are generally more sensitive than tiles with patterns, color gradients, or whatever the technical term is. Smooth surfaces are more sensitive than textured ones. Matte or polished/glossy finishes. For example, I can say that we currently have porcelain stoneware with an anthracite slate look. It is not as sensitive as some might imagine.

This is what our tile looks like, in case you can make out anything from the phone photo. I find it very durable. In reality, it is a bit darker. It also matches perfectly with the solid cherry wood flooring in the living and dining rooms.

Transition from gray tiled floor in the foreground to wooden floor in the background; wooden wall on the right.

However, when sunlight shines on parquet flooring, the dust is very noticeable as well. In our bathroom, we have dark anthracite tiles with some texture, and I find them quite prone to stains (even without sunlight). There are even marks—no idea where they come from (cleaning products??)—that simply won’t come off...
