Hello,

we are currently looking for tiles for our ground floor. Large-format porcelain tiles measuring 45x90cm (18x35 inches) are high on our list. I have a few questions about these:

Can they be installed with standard flexible tile adhesive? Maybe applying it thicker, or is a special adhesive required?
Is a special grout needed?
Can the tiles be snapped by hand, or is a wet saw necessary? Are there any other important considerations?

Thank you

Hello!

I can’t contribute much on the craftsmanship side. When it comes to the material cost of large tiles, doing it yourself might actually not save you money. Cutting the tiles likely requires a professional tile cutter and some experience.

Very important: The tiles must not be laid in the (desired) half-bond pattern but only with a grid joint—this is why we decided against this format.

Also: Draw the installation plan on the screed—especially in small rooms, the tiles may not look as expected. If you also strictly follow all expansion joints, not much of the large format remains.

In the end, we chose 60 x 60 cm (24 x 24 inches) tiles. They are usually cheaper, and the tile itself is somewhat more resistant to breakage.

Hello,

In our large bathroom (3.5 x 3.85 m (11.5 x 12.6 ft)) we also chose this format and have not regretted it so far. We had the tiles installed with a one-third offset pattern, and it looks great. A cross joint is not absolutely necessary, but you should avoid laying the tiles in a half-bond pattern, as that can cause issues. We opted for tiles with the same design—light for the walls and dark for the floor—and added a few accents with mosaic tiles. I believe our tile was called Kaleido.

Best regards,
Robert

As long as you don't have to install it yourself, it might still be manageable...

Porcelain stoneware tiles are not 5.5cm (2.2 inches) thick. They are estimated to weigh somewhere between 5 and 10 kilograms (11 and 22 pounds).
We don’t have them in the living room, but behind the toilet (exactly 90cm (35 inches) between the wall and the privacy wall), and on the ground floor behind the 90cm (35 inches) shower. They look stylish!

But why is it not allowed to lay them in a half-bond pattern?

It's clear that they aren't that thick or heavy, but installing such large tiles is still quite a hassle.
