Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

After May 2015:

Topic: DIY Work:

We have finally completed our terrace, 50m² (540 ft²), combining BPC with porcelain stoneware, all done as DIY. I didn’t expect mixing porcelain stoneware with BPC to be such a challenge... but the result makes it all worthwhile!

Above the area (west-facing terrace) with the porcelain stoneware, we are building a pergola ourselves using 13x13 cm (5x5 inch) laminated larch beams, measuring 4m x 3m x 2.70m (13 ft x 10 ft x 9 ft), and my lounge corner will go underneath! Next summer can’t come soon enough!

@KingSong Great terrace and amazing view! One more question: What kind of outdoor lights are those? I like them and they match well with the dark window frames.

We are currently in the middle of preparing the paving. It involves about 200 square meters (2,150 square feet) of continuous surface area (driveway, carport, and connecting areas).
Basically, we wanted to do everything ourselves since similar paving projects worked very well for friends doing it on their own.

However, due to time constraints, we will subcontract the preliminary work. The quote for earthworks (excavating 200 square meters (2,150 square feet), storing the soil on the side, compacting, and bringing in 60 cm (24 inches) of crushed concrete) is just under €2,000 plus taxes.
For the paving stones, we have budgeted up to €20 per square meter (around $22 per square yard) including taxes, totaling €4,000. Additional costs for edges, drains, etc., are around €1,000, making the total close to €8,000.

In this context, we are also subcontracting the rainwater infiltration system. Two concrete shafts including gravel, pipes, etc., have been quoted at €2,500.

Altogether, with our own labor and providing food for helpers, the total cost will be at most €12,000. Compared to other estimates, this seems to be on the lower end of the price range.

Construction site: timber frame on concrete floor, surrounding scaffolding, open field landscape in the background.

The house is coming tomorrow! Finally, it’s happening. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight. First, I’m going to bake some chocolate chip cookies for tomorrow.

Have fun, and as a tip, take pictures of everything and every wall—it helps a lot later on.
