Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

We cook a lot. So the kitchen not only has to look good but also be practical. Handleless cabinets were rejected right from the start. They’re just annoying.
Push-to-open (electric) is expensive and slow. Without electric it’s not as expensive but still slow.
With handle rails, I keep hurting my fingers.
So, get rid of them

I would call it experience. We just find it impractical. It looks nice but living with it for 20 years? No way, if I have the choice.

Cool... after 25 years of experience with my own kitchen (mom had knobs) most handles just annoy me: not only visually because there are too many, but also when leaning against them or getting caught on open handles.
Everyone has their own experiences. I cook handleless, and very deliciously and practically, too.

@zaba: We currently have exactly the same railing in our rental (just different wood) – it’s really very durable, so perfect for a rental. For my own house I’d probably look for something else – but if you like it, that’s fine. The quality is top-notch. The only issue is that you end up hanging stuff on it all the time because it’s so practical and a coat hanger fits perfectly over the rails *grin*

Yes, just like kitchen door handles

Unfortunately, the staircase gives off an ’80s terraced house vibe and doesn’t really fit with the rest of the house.

But taste is subjective, of course.

The staircase is a beautiful timeless design, which was already installed in the ’70s, but that’s exactly why it has its charm and value. It fits well with both industrial and Scandinavian styles. Surfaces should always be considered in relation to the floors and furnishings.
What is clear from the staircase is that it’s installed in a small space, so it’s quite steep... but that was known from the design phase.

What are those “yuck, ’80s terraced house staircase” comments all about? Are they really necessary? Who do they benefit?

I get the feeling that building a house goes to some people’s heads – suddenly they think they belong to an elite group who can judge taste just because they had to choose some things themselves. And of course with taste, their own is always the only true one*

The carpenter has now finished our last project, the wardrobe.

Great! How much does something like that cost? Did you include these costs in your budget from the start?

Our living space is slowly coming together. The kitchen will be installed at the end of the month. I expect we will move in within three weeks. Unfortunately, some of the lighting has a long delivery time and won’t arrive until early September. So be it.

Is there going to be a terrain / landscape work done above?

*I’ve stayed away from this thread for a while because I’m bothered by this kind of devaluation, too.
And: respect is due to neighbors including their cars

The staircase is a beautiful timeless design that was installed back in the ’70s, but that’s precisely why it has its charm and value. It fits well with both industrial and Scandinavian designs. Surfaces should always be considered together with the flooring and interior.
What’s clear about this staircase is that it’s placed in a small area, so it’s quite steep... but that was already known from the floor plan.

I feel like some people get carried away with building their own house – suddenly they consider themselves among an elite group who can judge taste, just because they had to make some personal “taste” choices. And for taste, of course, one’s own is always the only true one.*

Great! How expensive is something like that? Did you include these costs right from the start in your budget???

Will there be landscaping at the top?

*I stayed away from this thread for a while because I also find this kind of disparagement bothersome. And: respect is also due to the neighbors, including their cars.

That’s why I didn’t comment earlier. Of course, we gave the staircase a lot of thought. A concrete staircase with wooden treads was not an option for us because it would limit the open floor plan. Another alternative would have been a flat steel stringer staircase. That would have been more modern in design but simply wouldn’t stand out in that stairwell. A flat steel stringer staircase needs space to make an impact, and as you say, the floor plan limited a lot. So that option was ruled out.

In terms of walking, the staircase doesn’t feel narrow or uncomfortably steep. It’s interesting how some people feel able to judge these things just from photos.

Well, isn’t that something?

But this is what the forum is based on. It won’t change.

And yes, ypg, of course, it’s about personal taste. You like contributing to floor plans and try to support your comments with reasons to get them accepted. Is that objective or personal preference?
Similarly, a “peer group” of people with similar tastes develops and reinforces each other’s views. It’s always interesting when a new group forms and how the “established” members react to it.

zaba, even though still in the first build of their life, can identify construction mistakes through remote assessments. So others should also be allowed to judge the function of a staircase, right?

It’s no drama, just normal. It just feels different when you are on the other side for once.

Comments need to be justified and enforced accordingly. Is that objective or just personal preference?

... when I design children’s rooms and put myself in the shoes of annoying teenagers, withdrawn husbands, and moms doing laundry ... well, what is that? Some call it empathy, combined with basic knowledge, attention, and experience.

Mr. guckuck: the questionnaire is mine, so that proposals can be made objectively and IN THE BEST INTEREST of the client. Attentive readers will also notice that I don’t impose or push anything. Except when it comes to facts (e.g., window size), where I am quite firm.
Personal preference clearly applies to the discussion about the floor plan, but certainly not to the optimal process of preparing a midday meal, even though I know how the kitchen must be arranged to be as efficient as possible. And I stand by the latter. In any case, I am not the one making the final decision.
I hope you understand what I’m trying to convey.

By the way, this has very little to do with taste.

But it’s about the pictures – our kitchen is finally finished except for a few details, and we’re quite happy that it turned out nicely in the end.

Hello Sebastian, the space seems to be used optimally. What are the dimensions of your kitchen?
