Hello, we are about to build a house. This is a proposal from the architects on how we could do it. We will build with a basement, so the utility room on the ground floor will be removed and relocated to the basement. The entrance area will be mirrored so that the office is on the right instead of on the left as it currently is in the floor plan. There will be a lockable door from the carport into a pantry, which then leads into the kitchen. Also, the guest toilet will be located on the left side of the floor plan. I hope you can understand what I mean. We want to separate the kitchen from the living room with a large sliding door. There will still be a passage from the hallway to the kitchen. Do you see any suggestions for improvement? What could be done better? What would you have done differently? Sorry that I don’t have the exact floor plan according to my ideas to share—I don’t have one on hand at the moment.
It would be great if you could share your opinions.

Well, architect… that’s a standard floor plan from a catalog! 😱 Still, it doesn’t have to be a bad one. It is straightforward, simple, and practical.
If I understand you correctly, the upper part is mirrored, and the utility room becomes an office?!
Then I don’t quite understand the pantry turning into a vestibule... with two doors in that small space, how can you even fit shelves there??? I would leave it as is; an exterior door causes more problems than benefits.
Having the staircase starting at the entrance is not very practical… but with that home builder, you probably won’t get better alternatives.

Yes, you understood it exactly right. It would be practical to have direct access from the carport to the pantry. That way, you wouldn’t have to walk around. Do you think that would be too tight? Should it be built larger? What else could be done differently? Overall, we like it quite a bit, but the issue with the door would be good to address.

The problem is simply the office space. I would be fine leaving it out, but my wife really wants it. She thinks it could possibly be used as a guest room, but isn’t it too small for that?

Sorry, but if you really want comments or opinions, you shouldn’t rely on our imagination. Instead, you should post reasonably accurate floor plans with measurements here. It would also be helpful to include elevations or the position of the house on the plot, etc.
As it is, this doesn’t help much...
