I am currently facing the decision of whether to buy pre-weathered titanium zinc standing seam panels for the new gable roofs—at about 10 € more per square meter (roughly $11 per square meter)—or to watch for five years as the roofers’ work marks gradually fade.
I have chosen the latter… not because of the price, but because I find materials and their changes interesting.
Yes, I also consider the environment an important aspect.
What I mainly mean is that decisions about the appearance of things ALWAYS involve the inner world of humans—and that is less straightforward than one might sometimes think 🤨

For example, our completely overgrown and untouched outdoor area of our former rented house located deep in the forest by the lake would look out of place in our current new housing development. pagoni2020 schrieb:
It’s more that I liked something elsewhere which I now think I would like less in a new housing development. Then there must be something wrong with the mindset 😉
I design my garden / my xyz FOR ME, according to how I like it (within the given requirements). Not to match the neighbors’ gardens. If it were about that, I wouldn’t need a garden at all, because a lawn desert with a wire mesh plastic fence and a swing/trampoline on it is not my idea of a garden.

Would you mind sharing what the extra cost was? I assume the windows, downpipes, etc. are not RAL 7016 but a darker shade? If I remember correctly, it was about 3,000 gross.
The parapet, windows, and downpipes are all RAL 9004 (Signal Black).
We had grown tired of anthracite and therefore wanted something darker.

Do you have decentralized residential ventilation systems everywhere? Why? And which ones? To be honest, we hardly gave the topic any thought since we already have the same system (Aereco) installed in our current apartment.
So far, we are very satisfied.

Then something must be wrong with the posture 😉 Okay, that’s what my orthopedist already said......

I have my garden / my xyz for MYSELF, how I like it (within the permitted guidelines). Not how it fits with the neighbors' gardens. You probably misunderstood me, or I didn’t express myself clearly 😀. What I want to say is that depending on the surrounding environment, I like things differently… that is, for ME, whether the house is in a new housing development or stands alone by a lake or in the forest. I wasn’t considering the neighbors’ taste here, although with more closely built plots, I might factor that in a little when it comes to aesthetics. A ruined, overgrown castle is something beautiful. A partly dilapidated residential complex from the 1970s, on the other hand, looks quite different.

Then something is wrong with the attitudeI can’t agree with that. In different places, I find different things appealing and suitable. In the countryside, I think it’s great to mark a part of the property, for example with a rough Bonanza-style fence. In an urban suburb with a much smaller plot, I would find that ridiculous.
I would never have built our house exactly like this in an urban area. It fits the rural location. In an urban environment, I would probably have been more interested in a historic period house, a brick warehouse with potential for expansion, adding extra floors to a high-rise, or even a houseboat, rather than building a detached single-family home myself.
You can like more options than you actually realize—making a context-appropriate choice from many attractive alternatives is not a question of principles but a very personal decision.
