Hi!

Has anyone here installed a separate water meter for their garden irrigation to save on wastewater charges? It’s not free, of course; I’m curious whether it’s actually cost-effective.

In my case, it was handled through the local municipality.

Do I need to have the water meter installed by the plumber, or can I do it myself?
Ask your local authority; they should know. Our neighbors were able to have it retrofitted.

Does that mean if I don’t have a separate meter, I pay sewage fees on the water I use in the garden?
Yes, that’s how it works here or will be. Sewage costs 4€/cubic meter, and the water that goes through the garden meter and soaks into the ground doesn’t enter the sewer system, so it’s deducted.

Hmm, I’m thinking... I will probably only need it if the cistern ever runs empty, since I use it to water my garden, I believe... and for the small amount I occasionally take from the drinking water supply...

You need to consider whether it is worthwhile. If the cistern is properly sized, it can cover a lot of needs. However, if you want to regularly water the lawn, the situation changes. And I wouldn’t want to fill a pool from the cistern.

But you’re not going to fill the pool through the garden water meter, are you? At least in our local regulations, that is explicitly excluded, as is washing vehicles in the parking areas. That makes sense since the water doesn’t infiltrate the ground but goes into the sewage system...
Is it different where you live, or do you live by the motto “hope for the best” or “what the municipality doesn’t know, ...”? ;-)

For us, this is not an issue. Although at the moment we have more of a paddling pool than a proper pool, we empty it onto the lawn. Our neighbor has a large pool (without separate meters) and calls the local authority before filling it to report that he is filling his xx m³ (xx cubic yards) pool, and the amount is then recorded as a deduction.
