Absolutely correct, except that a dirty or algae-covered plaster facade unfortunately ages with much less dignity than a patrician house in Venice :p Maybe we should choose materials more often based on the fact that they still look good in a few decades without constant maintenance...

Maybe we should choose materials again more with the idea in mind that they will still look good in a few decades without constant maintenance...Shouldn't modern wall coatings have reached that point by now? The key term here is hydrophobic treatment. I have seen brick walls that were treated with a hydrophobic coating years ago. Over time, these façades—especially the mortar joints—have surprisingly cleaned themselves "naturally," since growth is hardly supported due to the lack of moisture.P

Water features always make an impression, of course, but take a look at the columns and the balcony on the right above the red posts. They’re just dirty... but somehow it looks good (at least to me).The problem, however, is that in a place like that or in such a special setting, it looks nice; in a new development area, it would look terrible. Although I completely understand and agree with your intention, I realize for myself at least that, for example, our completely overgrown and untouched outdoor area of our former rented house deep in the forest by the lake would look silly in our current new housing estate. An interesting point is the dialogue between the visual appearance and internal processes.
Often, there is a kind of judgment: one thing is good, and the other is bad.
... and when you question this – is it really like that, or does anything actually improve by this division? – you can often become more relaxed.
What I always find crucial with such questions is: does my judgment make the world a more pleasant place or not?
A neighbor who dislikes my house just because it doesn’t look brand new, I find annoying.
... unless they are right 😳
... did I say it was simple? No!
Whether something has dignity or is simply neglected can be a subtle difference.
Looking closely, inside and out, is always the right approach, in my opinion 😎

pagoni202017 May 2021 11:37I’m not talking about a classification of good or bad. It’s more that I liked something in another place, which I now wouldn’t like as much in a new housing development. For me at least, this often has to do with the respective surroundings; but maybe I didn’t express that clearly enough. 😀
