ᐅ Is it better to install the heat pump inside the house or outdoors?

housedreamerHello everyone,
we are currently considering the advantages and disadvantages of installing the heat pump either in the basement or outside in the garden.
Our architect has simply planned to place the heat pump behind a retaining wall in the garden.
- What are your experiences?
- What are the approximate cost differences?
- Would you recommend installing it indoors or outdoors?
The lot is 450 m² (5400 sq ft), with the house including a double garage occupying about 140 m² (1500 sq ft). There would be enough space in the basement.
Thanks

If you install it in the basement, you have less space there.
In our case, it is a combined unit, so only the basement installation was possible. Some neighbors have a split unit, and it often hums in the garden. For others, the area in front of the house gets icy in winter because of the split unit.
If we had the option, I would have avoided the garden installation, as we often have a marten passing by.
It is an air-to-water heat pump
Hello,
even though Bauexperte will probably call me too sensitive right away:
If you really want to have such a noisy device, please be considerate of your neighbors and have it installed in the basement.
Your architect’s planning already says a lot: “planned behind a retaining wall in the garden.” So you don’t have to hear the noise yourself, but whether it bothers others doesn’t matter.
Tip: Take advantage of the recent cold nights and walk through a new housing development. Then you will hear how loud the outdoor units can be. And then reconsider if you really want to subject the people you will be living side by side with for decades to this.
Best regards,
Andreas
