Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

After May 2015:

We have the sink and cooktop on the island (depth 1.20m (4 feet)). The sink is positioned on one side of the island, leaving a nice, large workspace next to it.

At the front side of the island, we installed a double power outlet, since power is mainly needed there. We specifically avoided placing outlets on the work surface. This setup has proven effective for us.

Socket outlets on the side panel of the island have the disadvantage that:
1. the distance to the cooktop is often too great
True. I have experienced this. I walk over to puree with the pot using the hand blender 😀

2. if you plug in a phone, radio, or similar here, you might catch the cable while passing by and pull the device off the island (this has happened to me once with a phone).
You can clearly see this in the photo from @Nida35a
Definitely keep phones elsewhere!

Regarding water and splashes, etc., no one should have sockets immediately next to the bathroom sink. But these are actually standard and often not further away than 20cm (8 inches).
Those are specially protected, Alessandro 🙄

Always on the end panel! Never drill into the fronts! No holes in the countertop! All a big no-no 😀

There are those retractable power outlet towers commonly known from office desk accessories. They might be suitable for a dead corner. Not really practical for an island, though...

If the outlet is not needed and the cover is closed, you can even place something on it. Of course, a champagne or wine glass would tip if placed on the edge. The outlet is not right in the middle of the workspace. It doesn’t get in the way when rolling out dough; at least I have plenty of space next to it.

Cleaning effort is no more than with side-mounted models.

It can handle minor spills.

Wherever the outlet is installed, it should be flush. It would be frustrating to lose storage space because of a 5mm (0.2 inch) protruding outlet.

There are also these counter-like add-on structures. That way, you have a vertical surface where the outlets can be installed on the island. But I guess that design is from the 1990s and is no longer common?
