Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

confirms for me that it's wise to add at least 1 to 2 months of buffer time to the completion date given by the general contractor, even if it means the risk of double expenses like rent plus mortgage payment. He says October, but we are planning to move at the end of December.

I would do the same now! It reduces stress, and I’d rather take the risk of being double charged for a month or two. Definitely go that route!

We were promised mid-June, but it became clear that wouldn’t be achievable. By now, we are 7 weeks over schedule, and there’s no end in sight...

But don’t tell anyone that!

Otherwise, you end up with the same situation—those extra 1–2 months get used up anyway, and you still have stress because all the tradespeople think there’s plenty of time.

I share that concern! So you always have to keep the pressure on that you need to move in, otherwise it won’t help!

Phew... that sounds frustrating. I have to say, though, that I don’t know anyone whose first move-in went smoothly without any issues, so I would always plan for about two months of overlap with the rental apartment rather than just one. Also, I don’t know a single new kitchen that didn’t require some follow-up work. *fingers crossed*
