Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

You should have asked us how to get an off-white, cream, or something similar.

Yes. The list of things I should have asked you beforehand is gradually becoming almost endless. I underestimated the complexity of the questions; everything seemed so simple to me. 🙂 I assumed that the professionals involved would warn against the worst mistakes. But apparently, you only get that kind of service with an architect-designed house.
In hindsight, I also think it would have been better if my husband and I had drawn lots to decide who gets to design the house, since we live in very different aesthetic worlds, and the other could have just set a few conditions like a separate kitchen or something similar.
This is what happens when one person wants to spend their vacation by the sea and the other wants to go to the mountains 🙂 … and then, as a compromise, you end up somewhere like G...........n. 🙂

That’s the downside of such a compromise; in your case, it’s almost a lose-lose situation. (Although, you do have a single-family house, so it’s never really a “lose” situation). It could be done differently 😉

I don’t see it as bad as you do. You have very fixed ideas. How are craftsmen, whether general contractors or architects (in the end, they are the same), supposed to warn you about mistakes? They don’t know that the color tone you chose doesn’t have the effect you expect in your overall concept.
Symmetry was important to you, and I’m sure you were warned about it. Most people don’t really like symmetry here.
But seriously, you don’t like the look of a multi-family house, this cold social housing style. Would you be happier if the symmetry wasn’t there? I don’t think so. Once the garden is finished and the house doesn’t look lifeless, the multi-family house look and the social housing style will disappear.
Your house is not finished. Most houses look fairly similar when they are bare. It is only with furniture, decoration, and landscaping that they become more or less individual. You are now at the point where it will be decided how the house comes across.
Don’t mourn what you don’t have. Look forward to what you do have. Almost all of us have a punch list and had to make compromises.

Believe me, when you have to make all the decisions alone, it’s not easier either 😉. And things happen that you would have done differently later on. But none of those are tragedies. You can change the color anytime, though it’s not as easy on the outside as inside. But honestly, how often do you really look at the house from the outside? Soon there will be plants there, and when you come home or spend time in the garden, your focus will be on those instead.
Inside, you can design everything little by little as you like. We also just painted everything white at first due to lack of time. Now that I’ve finished the landscaping, I hardly spend time inside, and in autumn I will apply different plaster and paint to one or another wall.

If I understood you correctly, it’s the bathroom on the upper floor.

I think she means @Holzhäuschen

Mistakes are subjective. For example, floor-to-ceiling windows/sliding doors: I don’t see that as a mistake if the frame has the same thickness as other windows.
And yes: a homebuyer should do some research about what they are ordering. That works just fine with cars too 😉

If one person sets only a few functional requirements, and the other is more focused on aesthetics, the planning should work very well—as long as the person who has no preference for either aspect simply stays out of it and trusts the process.

The southern coast of Spain near Málaga offers both, Rhodos is known to me where you can reach/have both (mountains and sea) in one day. And then there’s the beautiful compromise of a mountain lake… everything offers more than G….n 😉 if you know what I mean.

@Pinkiponk It’s a pity that you don’t like the color of the house. I think it’s really beautiful. Our neighbors across the street had a similar color, and I enjoyed looking at it every day. After almost 20 years, the house was painted white during an attempt to modernize the rather playful appearance of the cottage. The previous yellow shade was much more harmonious with the red roof. I was so disappointed! I really hope you change your mind about it.
