I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

Apparently, a taller carport/garage is allowed, but a taller "fence" is not. Apart from the fact that their carport is an illegal construction and generally not allowed... but we didn’t want to argue on that level.
There’s no point in arguing; there’s a clear deal. If you act like the neighbor’s by-the-book inspector, you probably don’t have any skeletons in your closet. Otherwise, the neighbor might trip up and end up with a site plan showing the illegal construction in the mailbox of the local building authority 😉

Or you just don’t ask and simply get on with it.

I find the curb arch really interesting. You hardly ever see that.

The paving at the neighbor’s has not been damaged after 40 years. Perhaps too many vehicles drive over yours as well.
I would not paint the concrete. Gray is a clean contrast. If the shade doesn’t match exactly, it looks terrible. Also, the paint might not hold up, which would look shabby.

What do you mean by sandstone color? There isn’t just one sandstone color. Yours is yellow; ours is red.

I don’t want to see gray in my project, even though you’re right about it being a “clean contrast.” Concrete comes in almost all RAL colors, which are said to last quite a long time (though I’m not sure about that yet). I’m confident I’ll find a suitable shade. But as mentioned above, the edging stones might get overgrown, so then it won’t bother me anymore.

That’s exactly right, as I recently learned. :-) Now I also understand why the concrete industry often produces “sandstone color” with a reddish tone, which initially confused me. The “Kyffhäuser sandstone” is reddish, while the “Erzgebirge sandstone” is yellowish/sand-colored.

Here is a photo of our green roof on the garage, even though it probably doesn't count as a "garden." Apart from the green roof and the ivy next to the driveway, I unfortunately don't have anything else that could be called "garden-like" yet. Soon, I will have to climb onto the green roof to fill the gaps and remove the unwanted plants. The green roof brings me a lot of joy, even though I only see it from the window. It’s already buzzing and humming with all the animals that appreciate it. My neighbor opposite also sees it from their window and enjoys it as well. The green roof was installed/planted around early July, using sprouts (so no seeds or fully grown plants), mainly for cost and time reasons. I can definitely recommend using sprouts. In reality, the green roof looks better than in the photo, and today was a cloudy day due to the weather.

Below is a photo of our future front garden. Since we plan to drill a well behind the house (the work was unfortunately postponed by our well drilling specialist from the end of August to the end of September) and create a pond (possibly a swimming pond?), I am thinking of installing a fountain or something similar in front of the house, specifically in front of the kitchen window. My parents had one, and it looked very nice. However, my husband is not convinced yet, probably because of all the work involved. We will see.

Construction and garden area in front of the house: stacked paving stones, gravel pile, blue wind chimes, SUV.

Here is a photo of our future garden behind the house. The field is not part of it. At the back, we have about 350 sqm (3,765 sq ft), which is currently still a stubble meadow.

Wide field landscape: grassy path in the foreground, harvested field and tree line in the background.

In our region of the Rhön, the sandstone is also red.
A natural swimming pond is great but requires a lot of space (which is not easy with my sloped site) and is too cold for me most of the time. However, it always looks nice.

A green roof somehow feels like part of the garden. You rarely see a really great one. My husband doesn’t want one—at least not yet. When the current garage roof eventually starts leaking, he will want it. But that will still take several long years.
