Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Of course, it is not permitted.

In our area, it’s common for the mailbox to be located near the front door.

Same here. However, we also don’t usually have fences around front gardens. There is no through traffic or strangers passing by every day who might bother you or your home.

My parents have a mailbox built directly into their door unit, so you don’t have to go outside at all to collect the mail. I think that’s very convenient.

Yeah, that used to be common. With KfW stuff these days, it’s either not allowed or just too expensive. Although a stylish mailbox (mounted on the facade) can also cost quite a bit.

We had that in our last house (from the 1950s), and it would have been my first choice again. A beautiful, thick solid oak door with colored glass and metal accents. Nowadays, you can only get something like that as a custom order. I’m still interested in this topic, and as soon as we have the budget again, we’ll replace the current “modern” front door. I’ve already praised our 1950s door extensively elsewhere in this forum. The new owners love it too. 🙂 It’s a shame it’s no longer in style here. You see these kinds of mailboxes more often in American movies and TV shows.

I didn’t know it was allowed to place a private mailbox on public land. Where we live, that wouldn't be possible anyway because our property ends directly at the street without a sidewalk. (see photo) My nice mailbox would probably get hit pretty quickly. ;-) Naughty, very naughty other drivers. ;-)

It’s convenient. 🙂

At the moment, I plan to avoid fencing our property. I think a fence makes a plot feel even smaller and more cramped. If that’s not practical, then a fence or hedge will go on the two still open sides at the front and back. (The neighbors have fences, plants, and hedges on the right and left sides.)

Then you could set the gate slightly inward from the property line, with the fence on the boundary and the gate recessed about 0.5 to 1 meter (1.5 to 3 feet). That way, you can place the mailbox in front of the gate if you do end up installing a fence. Or you could choose a half-height fence with the mailbox right behind it. If the mailbox has the mail slot on the front and the door for retrieval on the back side, the mail carrier can deliver the mail from outside the property.

I don’t understand. It doesn’t matter whether he is at the front door or by the garden gate while you communicate with him through the intercom. 🙄

I don’t even have to talk to him at the gate. 😉

The scaffolding for the exterior plaster was removed, and I can provide additional photos. Hmm, it does look a bit like a "multi-family social housing" building now, since we had to skip details inside and outside due to the unexpected price increase. In hindsight, it might have been better to choose a “non-custom” standard house at a bargain price, which is usually quite “pleasant and modern.”
The colors inside and outside turned out much darker than I expected, even though I picked very light shades, assuming that colors on larger surfaces would appear darker. The contrast between the ceiling and wall colors is personally too strong for me; this might be due to applying paint twice over painter’s fleece and was not my intention. I aimed for the difference to be noticeable but almost imperceptible. On the plus side, I was at least able to keep a minimal number of windows and patio doors.
In my opinion, the house now looks not— as intended— nostalgic, but just old-fashioned. Well, our happiness doesn’t depend on that, and maybe I can hide it a bit with the landscaping. ;-) I won’t give up easily; if necessary, my husband “has to” paint reveals and install shutters. 🙂

Could you share some basic details like the size, costs, etc.?
