We need to illuminate them. The best you can do is choose between backlighting and spotlighting.
In Berlin, you also have to use capital letters. So if you have an additional house number, you can already rule out half of all house number sets because they come with lowercase letters. Fortunately, I don’t have that problem.

Now we’re missing @11ant. I think there was already a discussion here about house numbers, including whether they should be illuminated or not.
The house number needs to match your style. What works for a Bauhaus with a clean exterior won’t suit your home.
Mine is unlit, simple, black, just the number. This style has been criticized because it can make it harder for delivery services or emergency responders to find the house. haydee schrieb:

It really depends on where you live... If the numbering system in the area is logical and the houses or entrances aren’t difficult to find, the number definitely doesn’t need to be illuminated or mounted in a huge size like 5 meters (16 feet) on the house.
In the end, every emergency service uses GPS/navigation and will generally be able to find addresses quite well (provided the residential area is laid out logically).

If the numbering sequence in the area makes sense and the houses or entrances are easy to find, the number definitely does not have to be illuminated or visibly displayed at around 5 meters (16 feet) in size on the house. That is simply incorrect. There are plenty of areas where an illuminated sign is mandatory, regardless of how logical or obvious the numbering is.

At least in Baden-Württemberg, it’s not a requirement.
The typical regulation that applies almost everywhere is:
“clearly visible and appropriately sized from the public roadway” → which is basically always the case unless you hang your sign behind the house xD, and of course it’s also a matter of interpretation.
I would do whatever you (the original poster) like and install it so that it can be seen clearly from the sidewalk or the street.
About three weeks ago, I also put up our house number. At first, I wanted a size of 12cm (5 inches), but my wife thought it was too small, so we went with 20cm (8 inches) 😎
Honestly, the house number shouldn't be any smaller 😉
The model is from Metzler, black Arial font. It was important to me that the number stands out a bit from the facade. Fortunately, we only have one digit. With more digits, installation might not always be that easy...
