Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

That definitely wasn’t meant negatively; your garden is like an empty space. Be proud, it really shows that less can be more. What are you planning to put on the rounded corner? I’m sure you have a must-have idea for that spot.

Is that possible? Our house supplier strongly forbade planting on the drainage strip, and I have never seen it done anywhere. Thanks in advance for your reply. 🙂
Yes, it is possible. I hadn’t considered it before either, but I came across it in Reinhard Witt’s books. He works extensively with poor, dry sites—basically pure gravel or crushed stone (plus just a little compost). Water drains through well, similar to paving right up to the house. Of course, the facade still needs to be protected with a dimpled membrane, and standing water must be avoided at all costs.

For me, this is a real advantage. We have a frost protection slab instead of a frost skirt, with insulation extending 55-60cm (22-24 inches) beyond the foundation slab. If I lay a standard gravel strip there, with the edging stone and the concrete underneath, the drip edge area quickly approaches about one meter (39 inches), which I want to use more efficiently. The north side is still an open issue. Shade plants usually prefer slightly moister conditions.

Have you studied landscaping or something similar? You always manage to make the property look so much bigger.
No... I never had anything to do with gardening. I grew up in the city with very little greenery around me. But the longing for a house and garden was strong. When we could finally afford our first house, I really got excited about the garden. For the housewarming, I received a box of cuttings and a grapevine—that was the beginning. Later, I kept going to the home improvement store to buy more plants. Nature is amazing—you buy tiny plants, and just 2 or 3 years later, everything is grown and empty areas are covered. What makes the space look bigger: no hedges all around, but allowing a view into the distance... this can also be the view into the neighbor’s garden—we never “closed ourselves off.”

Yes, it is possible. I did the same on the south side. However, only with cacti in some areas, and otherwise, we have loose sandy soil where the water drains quickly.
I wouldn’t do it on the west and north sides, though, since the strip serves as splash protection, and otherwise, the facade would get dirty quickly.

Well, you can’t always assume others are the same as yourself. Our daughter is 11, so neither a sandbox nor a play fort or similar playground equipment will be installed anymore. So part of the comment is simply off base.

We’re still at the beginning with the garden. So far, only the tasks we didn’t want or couldn’t do ourselves have been completed. The rest will be done gradually.

This is the shady corner, where either a small lounge area or a little coffee corner (I love coffee) will be created. The corner will be finished with tile cladding, and flower boxes will be hung there.

Definitely something where you can just chill in the shade and have a drink without getting your head overheated 😀

Our plot is otherwise in the sun almost everywhere 🙂

No, I don’t want to discourage anyone, but I see it every day.

Well, not everyone is the same.

Yes, I think there is still plenty of visual space, but it does actually look a bit dull.

Our landscaping contractors only left the site on Saturday afternoon. Basically, everything we didn’t want or couldn’t do ourselves is now finally completed.

The rest will come gradually.
