Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

This is a semi-detached house, and our neighbors decided shortly before the foundation slab was poured that they wanted to use brick cladding instead.
I find the visual separation quite original.

That’s naturally a bit annoying, but in my opinion, brick cladding for 7,000 EUR (about 7,000 USD) or 14,000 EUR (about 14,000 USD) for the entire house is quite affordable, right?
Yes, it’s affordable.

That’s obviously a bit inconvenient, but in my opinion, brick cladding for 7,000 euros (about $7,700) or 14,000 euros (about $15,400) for the entire house is quite affordable – isn’t it?

Unfortunately, we didn’t have 7,000 euros (about $7,700) available, and even if we did, knowing my neighbors and ourselves, we probably would have ended up choosing different bricks, resulting in an equally unsatisfactory outcome.

I don’t find the combination of brick cladding and plaster problematic. It often works very well on a single house. Of course, this should be agreed upon together during the planning stage of the two semi-detached units and NOT be changed unilaterally at short notice.

However, your base plaster (render) seems to be applied very high, clearly above the bottom of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Is this the final condition, or am I mistaken? Also, why is it like this?

Once the landscaping is done, I think most of it will be covered. The house is built on a 1.20 meter (4 feet) deep strip foundation.

That’s obviously a bit unfortunate, but in my opinion, brick cladding for 7,000 EUR (approximately 7,000 USD) or then 14,000 EUR (approximately 14,000 USD) for the whole house is quite reasonable – isn’t it?

“A Passat only costs 7k more than a Golf”
It’s a markup, not the total cost.

By the way, I don’t know exactly how much more a Passat costs, probably around 10k. It’s just an example for comparison.

That would be a total disaster. Is the neighborly relationship between two semi-detached house friends already strained? And your house isn’t even fully built yet. Partial brickwork like that has its advantages. At least then you clearly know which part belongs to your half and where you’ll need to put up the tall fence later.

That’s an extra charge, not the full cost.

Uh, I meant a different comparison.
Both buy a Golf from the same dealer.
One just chooses white paint, the other opts for a super glossy pearl white metallic finish with a 1,000 EUR (about 1,100 USD) surcharge. At most other dealers, that would cost a 2,000 EUR (about 2,200 USD) surcharge.

I think that’s a reasonable price. Of course, it doesn’t help someone who simply can’t afford it. But it is still affordable.

The entire comparison is flawed because the additional charges for optional equipment come from the manufacturer, not the dealer. It is also doubtful that VW does not apply a full cost accounting method for the Passat and that the price premium of the Passat over the Golf is arbitrarily set or even below production costs.

Profits are made with the top models, not with the Golf Trendline...

Also, consider who contributes the majority of profits within the VAG group. It is definitely not the core VW brand...

I suspect this was a classic "We're already here, the scaffolding is still up, so let's just do it quickly, and anyway we’ve already earned enough from the neighbor" kind of job, which explains the 7,000 EUR (about 7,000 EUR). I can’t imagine the neighbor had their entire house faced with brick for 7,000 EUR. That would be absurdly cheap.
If I take mid-range material costing around 40 EUR (about 40 EUR) per square meter and 150 m² (about 1,615 sq ft) of facade, the material alone would cost almost 7,000 EUR (about 7,000 EUR)...
