Good architects certainly do that; of course, the tile size needs to be finalized first, there should be a laying plan including wall elevations, and then this wouldn’t have happened.

Otherwise, I’m still undecided about the tiles (torn between somehow nice and oh, terrible) and I hope you’ll post pictures once it’s finished.

Tile sizes are well known and not a secret.
You can plan shower niches accordingly. If you forget, you just take the niche as given and select the tile size afterwards.
If you know you only want one tile, you’ll find that anything over 120cm (48 inches) becomes difficult. In that case, you make the shower narrower. Alternatively, if you want the shower to be about 130cm (51 inches), you simply don’t use a 120cm (48 inches) tile but rather the 80cm (32 inches) one and cut it to fit.

In this case, it was just handled without any proper planning.
