Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Could it be that much less was built back then, making purchased labor and specific raw materials simply much cheaper (also relative to income)?
Are there any statistics on this?
My father always says that as a young employee he earned only 400 Marks, but back then beer at the pub cost just 50 Pfennig.
Today, a junior employee might earn about 2,500 Euros, but beer in some areas already costs 6 Euros at the pub. That’s a price increase of almost 200%!

And only about 50sqm (living kitchen, parlor, and the mentioned bedroom, upstairs my great-grandmother lived in about 30sqm with a bathroom but no kitchen. Later, my grandmother washed herself in the kitchen. Full body with a washcloth, when she could no longer climb stairs.

Black is also a color, and the house construction itself took several years.
… anyway: the only consumer goods were the tube TV, typewriter, and tumbler dryer. The devices lasted for 30 years and were repaired when needed. Considering all the fancy consumer junk we have now—it all costs money 😉
Back then, these expenses didn’t exist.

I’m interested in who among the home builders has considered adding casings around their windows.
I guess this doesn’t quite deserve its own thread (?).

We installed decorative moldings around the windows and doors. The door and roof cornices are made of white concrete, while the window moldings are made of cement-coated polystyrene.

Two-story house with a red tiled roof, gray door, two plant pots, and a paved path.

I often hear people say... nobody can afford that.. How was it done in the past??

It was already somewhat expensive back then. For various reasons, people chose to include decorations, corners, and moldings on their houses. The cost benefits of standardization were not as significant as they are today, and building regulations allowed more flexibility in the choice of materials and methods for house construction. Often, the idea of status played a role, and there have always been specific symbols to represent social standing. Some cost categories that now naturally make up a large part of our budgets didn’t exist to the same extent a few decades ago – just today’s mobility and communication expenses, as well as leisure and vacation budgets, would have been unimaginable to our great-grandparents. Our attitude towards resource-conscious frugality today is very limited – so limited that it’s hard for us to even imagine how it once worked.

The mirror also needed to be replaced; it has become quite large.

Modern bathroom area with illuminated mirror, white rectangular sink, black faucet, and wooden backsplash.

I agree.. I would still miss a light from the front. Is there a lamp in the shower? I assume it is behind the washbasin.
