Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

In my opinion, turf has clear advantages over seeded grass.... especially the density that turf provides is phenomenal. My lawn has been in place for 3 years and there hasn’t been any weeds at all.
The density is due to how often it is mowed. The more frequently it is cut short in the beginning, the denser it becomes.

I’m glad we had everything finished, as shortly after moving in we found out we were expecting a child, who will soon be turning 2.
At the moment, there is hardly any time for maintaining the outdoor area—more than mowing the lawn and watering isn’t possible, since there’s always a little one arriving who wants to “help.”

Oh yes, the help of small all-rounders

The outdoor area is just as much living space as the house itself. Dining room, playroom, relaxation area.
Why is it so frowned upon to have the house built “turnkey”?

Of course, many cannot afford it.
A large part is appearance.
Many things can be done by an amateur themselves.

Still, I don’t understand it.

What kind of concrete raised beds are these?
Are they sitting on a foundation?

No, no foundation. The surface on the slope was compacted using an excavator, then a mouse mesh and the border slabs were installed, followed by the concrete elements on top. They are filled with natural materials, starting with paper, cardboard, wool, cotton, twigs, grass clippings, bark mulch up to well over halfway. The "good" compost soil is only added in spring, once everything has settled, and then planting takes place.

In the village, a man started his own business with these units. He also dyes the material in four different colors if someone wants that.

They can be quickly disassembled if the location needs to be changed.

The raised beds will get proper base slabs in front so that access from the external stairs on the left side is possible.

I’m surprised there hasn’t been any criticism so far, considering many contributors here are quite critical, sometimes even dismissive, which might discourage some from sharing photos.

What about Axel's house? Was it finished?

Yes, almost. Sorry for not updating sooner. There was just so much to do both inside and around the house. But now we are moved in and feeling very comfortable.

Best regards

Axel

West German Garden

Garden construction site with soil masses and excavation pit next to residential house

One of these West Germans once built a top-notch privacy screen here. Guaranteed evergreen and windproof thanks to a high-percentage clay filling. Along with that, a protective trench right next to the house. Anyone wanting to get from the living room to the garden just needs to be brave and able to jump well.

... my wife cried bitterly when the excavator was done. Meanwhile, most of the hills have been removed again – next year it will be nice again.
