Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Meaning new windows in about 20 years if things go badly.
In 20 years, window film technology will have further advanced, so surface appearance issues will be even more affordable to fix. Reduced sealing performance then won’t be so critical that it couldn’t be repaired with improved sealing tapes. Personally, I wouldn’t cut costs here does not mean that every buyer of uPVC windows will spend the rest of their life in desperate regret.
I also clearly stated that for the front door, I would have chosen aluminum. It undergoes significantly more opening cycles than a window and is larger and heavier. For lift-and-slide doors, I also see a level of stress that justifies using aluminum. For an ordinary window, anyone who wants to "save" money can do so if that makes them happy.

Plastics emit vapors due to simple chemical processes. This off-gassing causes the plastic to shrink and become brittle. The result is that the windows become drafty. I experienced this with windows after 20 years. This is one of the biggest disadvantages of plastic windows and a reason for their shorter lifespan compared to aluminum.

I hardly believe that off-gassing from plastic plays a significant role in dimensional stability, especially when there are other factors like temperature-related expansion (in both plastic and aluminum).

The operating mechanisms of plastic and aluminum lift-and-slide doors are so different that the plastic versions can be expected to have a shorter lifespan. What do you think, @11ant?

Lift-and-slide doors typically have a very "unbalanced" panel-to-frame ratio, high weights, and significant torsion forces during operation. This cannot be compared to a tilt window that remains in tilt position permanently except when you go on vacation.

My opinion that aluminum is more durable doesn’t have to be shared. On the other hand, I do not want to join the crowd that believes "the majority is never wrong."

Those who are older will remember: it’s not the first time that a mediocre product wins the larger market share (see Betamax / VHS or similar).

We are making great progress.

On Saturday, I chopped up a cherry tree that the excavator operator had knocked down.

Yesterday and today, a lot of filling and compaction was done. Then the surveyor came for the final staking, and some of the first strip footings were partially excavated.

How does aluminum in 7016 perform on large, south-facing window areas during summer? No cracking?

Here, partly wood/aluminum and uPVC-aluminum, exterior RAL 703 (703 in German color system) on large south-facing areas (for example, a lift-and-slide door about 5 meters (16 feet) facing south in wood/aluminum). Everything without cracking, warping, or anything like that. I had white uPVC windows in my apartment before. After 18 years, they looked terrible, even though I took great care of them. For that reason, I would never choose white uPVC windows again.

@Müllerin is enjoying it. Great time and everything so exciting!
