Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

There are already quite a few people for whom appearance almost always takes priority over functionality.
Partly, at least that’s the accusation my husband makes, “beauty” is also more important to me than practicality. However, I assume that the idea of what is beautiful can differ greatly between a layperson like me and an architect. For example, I don’t know if architects find Neuschwanstein Castle “pretty.”
Regarding architects, I also get the impression that they want to be original and “immortalize” themselves with their work—artists after all—which doesn’t always align with the client’s wishes or budget.
If I could afford it, I would still try to build with an architect. As for the architect of our prefabricated house manufacturer, I hope he can clearly tell me what the window dimensions should be and how many windows and doors we can aesthetically include in our new home. I have already realized that I find tall, narrow windows and doors—especially many of them—more attractive than a few wide ones. But on this question, I will in any case ask the forum once the time comes.

It is also important to distinguish what exactly is going to be built.

A single-family home with 200 m² (2,150 sq ft) allows for significantly more flexibility in terms of aesthetics, such as the placement of windows, compared to a 130 m² (1,400 sq ft) single-family home. In the smaller house, the interior layout has to work well above all else, while the exterior appearance is of secondary importance.

Reducing an architect’s role to simply drafting a plan based on pragmatic requirements can definitely hurt their professional pride. Anyone can do technical drawings; for that, you don’t need to have a degree.

Nevertheless, the client is ultimately the one who pays the bill. This means everything simply has to fit together.

That’s true. I’m also looking forward to the meeting with the architect; maybe my taste isn’t so bad after all. We might also pay an additional fee if we want to use the architect’s services more frequently or for a longer period, since according to the building specifications, if I remember correctly, only one planning consultation is included.

Don’t be mistaken, they are usually on vacation when you actually need them... p
