ludwig88sta18 Dec 2019 10:30I am currently envisioning a kitchen island that does not include a stove or sink. I believe it is easier and more cost-effective to have these installations (ventilation, electricity, water) located in the kitchen wall unit.
Is it still considered a kitchen island if it serves only as a workspace and countertop?

I installed the toe-kick lighting myself using Philips Hue. For that, I had the kitchen fitter install a power strip in the base cabinet area.
Luckily, we also have a robot vacuum, which already helps keep the overall cleanliness at a good level.
I’m glad I added the lighting, and considering the dust, I see no reason not to do it.
In our case, you can relatively easily remove the baseboards to access the wiring.
In the end, it wasn’t much effort, it was cheaper than having the kitchen fitter do it, and it can also be integrated into KNX.
If you can somehow get power down there, I’d recommend it to you.

I think both are easier and cheaper if these two installations (exhaust air, electricity, water) are integrated into the kitchen countertop wall unit. If you are building new, it should basically not matter where you have a pipe or cable installed. While follow-up costs are indeed higher for a stove due to extractor hoods or downdraft systems, I don’t see such price increases for the sink. Regardless, I would ALWAYS try to have one or more power outlets on the island so you can plug in kitchen appliances there as well.
We have power supply under the island, so it should not be a problem to set it up at the island. The kickboards are also just clipped onto the legs of the cabinets in our case.
I’m not sure if additional lighting is even needed on the other kitchen run. But that should be doable as well. I’ll ask my dear husband and show him your picture.

I plan to install a vented extractor hood, so the island solution is almost unnecessary. But yes, having the sink on the island could definitely be considered!?
In general, you shouldn’t be stingy with power outlets in a new build. We’re planning to install at least one above every windowsill (especially now during the holiday season, your decorations will thank you).
