Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

So, we will be doing almost all the exterior work ourselves and the usual interior work (wall and floor coverings except for the tiles in the bathroom). I enjoy this kind of work, but honestly, if we had the money, I would hire it out... because I also enjoy a barbecue evening on the finished terrace...

You forget that making something like this yourself can actually be a lot of fun.....and it’s extremely efficient too

Absolutely.
But the measurements have to be right.
Too much can quickly backfire.

I love digging in the soil. That’s why I wouldn’t give up planting.

To be honest, I find that a bit presumptuous...

What motivates someone to prefer having a professional do a job rather than doing it themselves doesn’t matter at all.
And if homeowner X chooses to have everything done right from the start to avoid hassle and spends several thousand euros on various tasks, that’s their right.
Homeowner Y, on the other hand, enjoys doing a little bit of work themselves every day.

But I wouldn’t judge anyone who chooses a different path, whether they want to, have to, or whatever.

And if the only reason is “just” that they didn’t want to do it themselves, so what?

I’ve done a lot myself too, but I focused on what I’m capable of.
And I’m really glad I invested money in a company for the landscaping so I didn’t have to live on a construction site for years.
I experienced this with a friend who spent the last four years working on his landscaping — he was completely fed up...

You yourself say that everyone decides for themselves, so it shouldn’t bother you if others supposedly take the easy way...

Wait… there’s nothing presumptuous about that, and as you pointed out at the end, I don’t judge anyone for their decision. I’m simply sharing my subjective opinion on the matter.

I didn’t want to start a debate in that direction, quite the opposite. We have deliberately outsourced several tasks ourselves and will continue to do so. Some work will be done by professionals while I focus on the job I’m paid for, which gives me more time for and with my family.

This was meant as a compliment to those who have the time, motivation, experience, and everything else needed to carry out their own (partial) projects. There’s no reason to turn a positive statement into a negative one.

Keep it up

No, that’s not overlooked – I enjoy doing things myself. I was just talking about the variety of reasons people choose to have something made.

Everyone can share their experiences here. In my case, the fact is that most of the tradespeople delivered average to poor quality work, despite supervision and offering refreshments.

Reasons: construction boom, lack of motivation due to low wages, unskilled labor.

By the way, these were well-known companies.
