Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Well, for those who can do it – and I don’t just mean having the right skills.

My husband and I leave the house before 6 a.m. and get home after 6 p.m. – so there isn’t as much time as you’d like. Often it’s not about not wanting to, but simply not having the time...

Of course, it always has to be possible. I’m not particularly skilled with DIY, and since I’m often away for work during the week, some projects have to wait a bit and take longer.

Being able to do something is one thing – wanting to do it is another. In my opinion, some people make it a bit too easy on themselves by expecting everything to be perfect right away, but fortunately, everyone decides that for themselves.

I enjoy watching the overall project grow and am willing to spend some of my limited free time on it, as well as be patient when things aren’t finished immediately. That’s why I also like the pictures where people have paved or built extensions themselves.

@KingSong: A great DIY project!

I also love doing things myself. I have many ideas, especially for the outdoor area, and I would like to work on them all year round. But there simply isn’t enough time, and for some things, not enough money either. It’s not always easy to find the right balance between work, family, and making progress outdoors. In between, you also want to enjoy the garden and not just be constantly busy...

And the little one wants to spend time with dad as well... My wife sometimes has to hold me back and force me to take a break...

To be honest, I find that a bit presumptuous...

What motivates someone to prefer hiring a professional over doing the work themselves doesn’t really matter.
And if homeowner X chooses to have everything done at the beginning to have peace of mind later and is willing to spend thousands of euros on various tasks, that is entirely their right.
On the other hand, homeowner Y enjoys doing a little bit of the work themselves every day.

But I wouldn’t stand there and judge someone who wants or needs to take a different approach, for whatever reason.

And if the only reason is “simply” that they didn’t want to do it themselves, so what?

I’ve done quite a bit myself, but I focused on what I’m capable of.
I am very glad that I invested money in a company to handle the landscaping, so I didn’t have to live on a construction site for the next few years.
I’ve seen it with a friend who has worked on his landscaping for the last 4 years – he’s completely fed up…

You even say yourself that everyone decides that for themselves, so it really shouldn’t bother you if others seemingly take an easier route...

Everything you do yourself will be of much higher quality than workmanship by a contractor. They simply lack motivation and passion, and often just rush through the work. When I do it myself, it’s done 100%.
