Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Without knowing any statistics, a window seat probably only makes sense in about 0.00001% of cases, assuming the plot of land even allows for it. Otherwise, it’s just a pointless bearded hipster trend.

hmm so our plot allows it AND I have a full beard... does that make me a hipster? Or am I part of the 0.00001%? Or both? Always this tendency to put people in boxes...

Here is the view in the evening from 9 p.m.:

Sunset over wide fields, view from a terrace onto open landscape with trees.

If someone enjoys sitting by the window watching the street or the new housing development, then a window seat is just as justified there as it is for us. It doesn’t always have to be a spectacular mountain valley view just because it’s a window seat.

I mentioned the concern about cleaning just to get those still planning to think about it.

Of course, you can reach the outside with a ladder, but if the window is on the weather-exposed side, cleaning twice a year is not enough.

It depends on your personal standards. The nice thing about windows is that after a while, they don't get any dirtier. When I was a student, I had an apartment where, for some reason, the final level of dirtiness was reached after about 2 weeks, so it didn't really matter – weekly window cleaning was never an option anyway.

The construction of the seating window (extending the entire reveal by 60cm (24 inches) and reinforcing it with thick beams so that up to four people could sit on it) cost about 800 EUR.

I honestly find it quite charming and it does look great, but does anyone actually sit on it? Even with four people? Wouldn't you rather sit on the terrace and enjoy the same view? Sitting together as four is definitely much more comfortable than on a window ledge.

But yes, it really is an eye-catcher.

The specification of four people was just our way of ensuring the construction is actually sturdy. And yes, it’s definitely possible that I’ll sometimes sit in the window seat with my wife, each of us holding one of the children on our lap...

But there is no doubt the window seat will be used a lot—we are all avid readers. Bookshelves will be installed along both walls of the hallway. Once the wood paneling and cushions are in place, this will become our new favorite spot!

Just imagining heavy snow outside, me sitting in the window seat with a glass of wine, feeling cozy and warm... mmm, I can hardly wait!
