Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

This happens to children who are wrapped in cotton wool and not allowed to do anything because it might be too dangerous.
Ah, do you say the same when you read in your local paper about a child falling down a folded-plate staircase in a stylish single-family home (only recognizable through a photo taken by the journalist through the window, while the child’s coffin is being carried out) because the parents found a handrail unstylish and let the child climb, which unfortunately ended badly?

I have never understood staircases without railings. First of all, children turned out fine in times when railings were the standard, and secondly, it’s simply an unnecessary accident risk. Most accidents happen at home.
And honestly: the bedrooms are upstairs—how steady is your footing when you’re completely drunk after a party? What if you want to show older family members the rooms upstairs?

I was still raised with the “form follows function” principle in mind. I’m open to discussing the number of balusters in the railing (4 or 5), but not the question of whether there should be a railing or handrail at all.

Our roof is more or less finished and the gutters are installed. We’re really happy with how it turned out. Unfortunately, you can’t see much because of the scaffolding.

Unfinished single-family house with scaffolding, roof with solar panels, building materials all around.

Looking at the weather forecast, it seems like nothing will happen for the next two weeks. I’m so frustrated with winter. The brick cladding is all neatly sorted and ready, but nothing has happened for ages.

The complaints only come after it has happened.
I also find it irresponsible... I see the dilemma with some neighbors—there, the grandmother prefers to walk around the house because she’s afraid of the stairs‍♂️ Truly a spectacular situation.

I didn’t mean the omission of the stair handrails or banisters, but rather the protective gates/railings at the top and bottom of the stairs.

The reason we don’t have a handrail is due to our daughter’s pull-ups. She walks more securely without it. However, she can’t fall to the side because there is a wall.

I never meant that the side railing was unnecessary. Please ask first before calling something unnecessary that was never intended that way.

Just being fair. I had understood it differently – please accept my apologies for that.

The image in my mind is shaped by the “stylish” staircases without handrails or balustrades. Often made of metal or concrete, also elegant with steps that appear to be floating against the wall.

I just can’t comprehend this triumph of style over function.
