ᐅ A handrail needs to be installed on the basement stairs. What are the typical costs?

Hello,

we bought a house that was built 20 years ago, and at that time no railing was installed on the stairs leading down to the basement. The previous owner wanted to arrange this part of the work themselves but never did, so it was just left as is. I find this visually unappealing and, above all, with our small children, not an option at all.

The staircase itself is white and solid, and now a railing needs to be installed on this masonry stairway. There is also no handrail.

We haven’t really looked into this remodeling work yet. Who would you contact for this – a carpenter? We would prefer a wooden railing for aesthetic reasons rather than something metallic.

Could you tell me what price ranges we should expect for quotes?

Wood is being considered, as it should also fit in visually. But do you also think it will cost several thousand?

That depends on your requirements. A batten fixed with dowels to the ceiling and the staircase wall, then vertical supports screwed onto it, and you're done. Which hardwood and how to stain it... that will determine the cost.
Were you the ones with the doors? Without any experience in craftsmanship?
No worries, you can manage that too!

Best regards in short

Maybe just take a look for a solution at the hardware store. There might be something affordable available there.

Yes, that’s us with the doors But while I’m quite hopeful about the door frame, we really don’t feel confident about installing a railing... Which "ceiling" should we be doweling into? We don’t want a prison-bar look from floor to ceiling, but a normal, half-height wooden railing with a handrail...

Robson, a hardware store visit is planned for next week. But do you think they have ready-made railings there??

It’s similar to how we do it. We installed the supports horizontally and then attached the railing to them. The handrail on top is also fixed on the wall side.
We really like the combination of stainless steel and wood.

However, we have the stairwell closed off with a wall panel, so I don’t need any railings.
I admit, my handrails come from Lidl (online shop). They are very inexpensive at €25/1.50m (about $27/5 feet). I chose the metal-look ones, but they also have beech wood options. I found them quite good. They feel solid and can be extended. I haven’t installed them yet, as the house has not been handed over… For the basement stairs, they are definitely sufficient, and I’ve now even reordered some for the rest of the stairs leading to the upper floor!
This is not an advertisement, just my personal impression. I’ve also received poor-quality items from this shop before…
