ᐅ Carport from the DIY store?

Hello everyone,
we are now starting to seriously plan the carport and I’m wondering what the real downsides of a DIY store carport are.
About a month ago, we assembled two garden sheds from a DIY store and so far we are not disappointed – of course, the walls are a bit thinner, the wood is still drying, etc., but they look nice (thanks to paint) and serve their purpose.
Does anyone here have a carport from a DIY store? I often read about carport prices beyond 8,000€ – at the DIY store, the kit costs maybe 1,500€ (already a somewhat higher quality one).
So far, we have contacted a master carpenter who, despite an initial meeting, never provided a quote.
Good luck!

Yes, I looked at that too – unfortunately, it’s a bit narrow for us.
How many people did you have for the assembly? @Curly

Ours measures 3.97m (13 feet) by 7.08m (23 feet). My husband and I set it up ourselves; it wasn’t difficult.

Best regards,
Sabine

Good to know – my father also always says you can do it alone if necessary, but he tends to exaggerate.
What about untreated wood? Can you achieve the same result by painting as with pressure-treated wood?

Usually, you can build a carport yourself without needing a specific kit. Just look up the construction method online or at a hardware store, and then customize it to be larger if needed.

You can get the materials from any local timber supplier. It’s also a good idea to ask them if they can assist you with choosing the right materials.

My dad has built 5 carports himself, and even after 15 years, they are still standing strong. The wood is still in great condition.

So, we just visited the hardware store/building center and got some advice.
The consultant explained the structural differences between the store brand and Scheerer.
He calculated the cost for a Scheerer carport with an aluminum roof, 4 x 9 meters (adjusted to 3.6 m x 9 m) and one of the store brand with a wooden roof (3.6 m x 9 m as standard), both including a storage room; he would not recommend the aluminum roof for the store brand. Both are made of glued laminated timber.

In most cases, a building permit / planning permission is required for carports, which means structural engineering approval is necessary. If you can provide that individually, of course it’s possible. However, when making such statements, it’s important to keep in mind that in Germany there are many “DIY experts” who might read comments like the above and simply copy them.

Of course, this can be done – but it should be noted that getting a permit afterwards is always more expensive than asking beforehand.

I never said building without a permit was allowed. You need one anyway. Overall, you should also feel confident enough to handle it yourself and apply for it accordingly if necessary.
