Hello everyone,
we are now starting to seriously plan the carport and I’m wondering what the real downsides of a DIY store carport are.
About a month ago, we assembled two garden sheds from a DIY store and so far we are not disappointed – of course, the walls are a bit thinner, the wood is still drying, etc., but they look nice (thanks to paint) and serve their purpose.
Does anyone here have a carport from a DIY store? I often read about carport prices beyond 8,000€ – at the DIY store, the kit costs maybe 1,500€ (already a somewhat higher quality one).
So far, we have contacted a master carpenter who, despite an initial meeting, never provided a quote.
Good luck!

When driving through somewhat older residential areas from 10 to 15 years ago, I have always been put off by the appearance of simple carports. Additionally, the space under the carports always looked cluttered. (I would probably be that kind of person too) That’s why we decided to go with a garage instead.
That will be difficult for me with the garage.
Simple, meaning without a special roof, stone wall, and lion statue on top? I also know it like this—that all carports eventually start to show wear... but I haven’t really noticed a big difference between a DIY store carport and a designer carport (of course, later on you don’t necessarily remember which was which).

Take a look at how it will look in three years. If wood is processed too early, it will warp in all directions.
What you usually don’t get at a hardware store—or only at an additional cost—is a custom fit for the building and both the substructure and superstructure. Also, I bet you can get the material cheaper at a regular timber supplier. So, it’s worth checking how the prices really compare.
Personally, I only buy consumables, small parts, garden materials, etc., at the hardware store—anything that is meant to be durable has no chance there. Either the quality isn’t right, or if the quality is good, you can buy it cheaper from a specialist dealer. I would be very cautious about what kind of carport you can get there for $1500. Hardware stores cannot perform miracles when it comes to prices.
Best regards,
Dirk Grafe

What generally looked better in older residential areas were carports with an overhanging hip roof covered with roof shingles, instead of the continuous wood trim all around. This way, the carport simply does not weather as quickly. However, I don't know if these are also available at the hardware store.
