Hello everyone!

I have a fairly specific question that’s been on my mind for some time, and I’m hoping someone with relevant experience can help: Are there affordable edge bandings suitable for the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit that can be found at hardware stores?

I’m looking for a solution that is not only cost-effective but also convincing in terms of durability and ease of application. Since KALLAX has quite thin edges, it’s important to me that the edge banding isn’t too thick and adheres well to the MDF.

Maybe someone has tips on particular brands, hardware store chains, or alternative sources for so-called "edge bandings" that have already been tried and tested?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

In most hardware stores, you will usually find standard edging strips made of PVC or ABS. They are affordable and fit well, but be sure to ask about the width and thickness. For KALLAX, you need something with a width of 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) and a thickness of 0.4-0.6 mm (0.02-0.024 inches).

Check out Hagebau or Obi; they often have affordable edge banding. Be careful with the color, as it's usually only available in wood finishes or white. White generally works well for KALLAX.

Here are a few tips about edge banding for KALLAX from the hardware store that might help you with purchasing and application:

1. Material choice: PVC edge banding is usually thin, flexible, and quite affordable. ABS is somewhat more durable but also more expensive.

2. Dimensions to consider: KALLAX edges are about 10 mm (0.4 inches) thick, but often only the visible thin MDF edges are covered. Therefore, an edge banding width of around 19–22 mm (0.75–0.87 inches) is usually sufficient.

3. Processing: Many edge bandings are either self-adhesive or iron-on. The hardware store often offers the latter. Pay attention to the adhesive strength and temperature resistance.

4. Color & design: Hardware store edge banding often does not perfectly match IKEA surfaces in color. White or beech designs tend to work best.

5. Recommendation: If you’re looking for a cost-effective solution, buy a white PVC edge banding around 0.4 mm (0.02 inches) thick with iron-on adhesive. This holds well and looks neat.

Caution: Edge banding that is too thick can negatively affect the appearance and functionality of KALLAX.

If you like, I can also share a small tip for ironing on the edge banding.

Thank you for the detailed tips! The color and material matching is exactly what worries me a bit. Is white actually the standard for edge banding on KALLAX, or are there alternatives that reasonably match the typical KALLAX colors (white, black-brown)?

And regarding iron-on edge banding: Are there any special considerations when applying it at home? Temperature, duration, etc. are new to me.

Regarding color: White is the most commonly used edge banding for KALLAX, as it matches well with both white and lighter surfaces. For black-brown, it is more difficult to find matching edge banding directly at hardware stores, as they often only carry wood-colored or lighter options.

When ironing on the edge banding: set the iron to medium temperature (about 140-160°C [284-320°F]), place the edge banding with the adhesive side onto the edge, then press slowly and evenly. It is best to place a thin cloth between the iron and the edge banding to protect the material. After cooling, press the edges firmly with a wooden spatula or bone folder.
