ᐅ Carport from the DIY store?

Hello everyone,
we are now starting to seriously plan the carport and I’m wondering what the real downsides of a DIY store carport are.
About a month ago, we assembled two garden sheds from a DIY store and so far we are not disappointed – of course, the walls are a bit thinner, the wood is still drying, etc., but they look nice (thanks to paint) and serve their purpose.
Does anyone here have a carport from a DIY store? I often read about carport prices beyond 8,000€ – at the DIY store, the kit costs maybe 1,500€ (already a somewhat higher quality one).
So far, we have contacted a master carpenter who, despite an initial meeting, never provided a quote.
Good luck!

I believe that in Lower Saxony, carports are now generally exempt from needing a building permit / planning permission. In our case, the carport was included in the house building permit / planning permission.

This year, we still needed a building permit for the carport.

Hello,

Building regulations can sometimes be a bit strange. It can even depend on the location on your property where you want to build your carport. We need to designate two parking spaces on our property, which are located right in the driveway. If we want to have a carport over those, we need a building permit / planning permission. However, if we build a carport directly next to the house, it does not require approval because legally it counts as a third parking space.

Not easy to understand...

Best regards,

Andreas

I never said construction should proceed without a building permit / planning permission. You need that anyway. You should also feel confident enough to apply for it yourself if necessary.
Don’t you then also have to submit the structural calculations?

Our garden shed and carport are both from the home improvement store, and I would buy them again without hesitation. Both have now stood for about 8 years, and neither the shed nor the carport shows any damage. If you’re really worried that something might go wrong, you can simply add a few extra screws and brackets to the carport, but it’s not really necessary.

We now have two quotes:
Scherer 3.6 m x 9 m (11.8 ft x 29.5 ft) with storage shed, glued laminated timber, aluminum roof with anti-drip: approximately €4300.
Mr Garden 3.6 m x 9 m (11.8 ft x 29.5 ft) with storage shed, glued laminated timber, wooden roof for approximately €3400.

I think we will go with the Mr. Garden carport.
