Are there any experiences or recommendations regarding the cladding of the roof overhang, which is 50cm (20 inches) wide? Wood or plastic panels?

Without any experience with plastic, I would say today: choose plastic.
No... see: I’m currently having problems with a wooden facade myself (thread “next to” yours).
However, I must also say: we have wood in the roof overhang and haven’t had any issues or defects so far. For ecological reasons and primary safety, I would recommend high-quality wood!

Everyone who has wood recommended I use plastic before building the house. The general consensus was that the maintenance effort (especially painting) is simply higher, and this causes particular problems with the gable.

For a bungalow, the extra cost is not worthwhile because you can reach the eaves with a step ladder and, if painted well, it lasts about 10 years without issues. One-and-a-half-story gable houses sometimes require scaffolding. Expensive. Therefore, PVC is often used. K.

I prefer wood, as I don’t like the look of plastic (of course, it’s always a matter of personal taste...).

I have also seen plastic fade yellow on some houses after just a few years... I’m not sure if this always happens, but if it does, plastic can look quite shabby.

This is a real risk. Plastics are often not UV resistant. However, if it is PVC like what is used in doors and windows, it should be fine.
Personally, I also prefer the wood look.
