Hello everyone,

since I noticed the topic about stair dimensions in another thread and have been uncertain for a few weeks whether the stair measurements are acceptable, I’m bringing it here for discussion.

My only experience is with the stairs at my parents’ house, which are 2.30m x 1.65m (7 ft 7 in x 5 ft 5 in) and, in my opinion, comfortable to use.

Attached is the image with the measurements provided by the architect. The stairwell dimensions are exactly 2m x 2m (6 ft 7 in x 6 ft 7 in).

What do you think?

Tastes vary so much... This staircase gives me the creeps. I think once you've seen a cat slip through or a child squeeze past the stair gate and hang on the staircase, you no longer want open stairs. Also, I personally find (but of course everyone can decide for themselves) the wedge-shaped steps very unpleasant. For me, walking feels much more comfortable on a straight staircase or a staircase with landings.

Yes, you’re good. If I could wish for something, I’d pick a curved staircase with a 4m (13 feet) diameter and a nostalgic wrought-iron railing. But that’s not what we’re discussing here. A half-turn, single-flight staircase for a 2x2m (6.5x6.5 feet) area is needed. Also, a landing is not an option!

This is actually a different staircase, which is why it appears narrower, but it is probably more appealing because the color and decoration are understated.

Just as a side note: How high does the staircase need to be? So, room height plus ceiling = ?

My concerns regarding an open staircase are independent of the "building envelope" of the staircase. As for the landing, you are of course right, kaho

I get creeped out by that too. However, a masonry central stringer makes a big difference—then you don’t look through an open shaft where a railing built into the stair structure stands like a sculpture made of square steel tubes. For cats, risers are a must; I agree on that. With these two details, the same stair layout looks completely different from the scary picture.

With a landing and thus no spiral, the staircase would practically grow by the depth of the landing (or a bit more), which would change the floor plan significantly.

As I said, feel free to build it exactly as drawn.
