ᐅ Why does my Billy bookcase keep squeaking when I open the doors?

Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat unusual question about my Billy bookshelf from IKEA: Why does it keep squeaking every time I open the doors? It’s not just a one-time squeak; the noise happens every single time I open the doors, and it’s quite unpleasant.
The bookshelf is in a rather dry room and is about 3 years old. I’ve already tried lubricating the hinges, but the effect didn’t last long. The doors are quite straight with no noticeable play, and there isn’t much weight on them. I’m surprised that the noise doesn’t only occur at wide opening angles, but every time with the same sound.
Does anyone have an explanation or tips on how I can fix this permanently? Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for the tips so far!
@Jensson: Your instructions make a lot of sense; I will remove the hinges completely and clean them.
@joro10: The hinges are indeed made of metal.
What surprises me even more: When I gently move the door, the noise changes slightly. Could this indicate wear, or is it more likely due to an uneven contact surface?
Thanks in advance!

Moving the door usually changes its position in the hinge frame. This could indicate slight play or minor wear. It is important to check the hinge area for small hairline cracks in the wood.
If the shelving is older, the wood can also change slightly over time, especially with varying humidity levels. This can lead to uneven stress and cause noises.

I know that feeling all too well when a squeaking noise drives you crazy! 🙂
If the shelf has been standing near a window for a while, the material can also expand or contract due to temperature changes. That could be another reason for different noises when it is gently shaken.
Hang in there; usually, with some patience and the right tools, you can fix it!

Oh, these squeaky doors could almost be a music piece of their own 🎵😉
Jokes aside: Sometimes a drop of wax (from candle leftovers or beeswax) on the hinges helps, especially when oil or spray makes the area too “slippery.” This adds a bit more grip without attracting dirt as easily.
You can try experimenting to see if it dampens the sound. Good luck!

When I slightly move the door, the noise changes a bit. This actually suggests mechanical tension or slight play in the hinge. My recommendation would be, after cleaning and lubricating, to also check the door adjustment at IKEA. Billy doors can often be fine-tuned slightly to achieve an optimal position.
If the screws for the door hinge are slightly loosened, you can carefully readjust them to avoid pressure points that can cause squeaking.
