Hello everyone, I have a question about customizing my Ikea Besta cabinets: Is there a way to add custom-made handles to the Besta doors? I don’t want to use any of the existing handle options from Ikea but rather something I craft myself that matches the style of my interior. The challenge I’m facing is how to create attachment points on the doors without damaging them or compromising their functionality. Are there any experiences or recommendations regarding materials, fastening methods, or preparations that could make this possible? I’m especially interested in solutions that are reversible and don’t leave any permanent marks.

Screw from the back, pre-drill the holes, attach the handles from the outside, then slightly shorten the screws to protect the backside. Concealed mounting with cover caps. Done.

Another idea: If you want to make your own handles from metal or wood, you could also use magnetic handles. For this, you attach a thin metal plate or strip on the inside of the door. The handle is then magnetically attached on the outside and can be adjusted or replaced relatively easily. This saves drilling and is reversible.

Magnet-based fasteners offer certain advantages but always need to be evaluated for load-bearing capacity. Ikea Besta doors have a certain weight, and the handles are pulled. It is important to ensure the magnetic force is strong enough; otherwise, unintentional slipping can occur. Alternatively, a combination of a magnet and a small screw fastener is advisable if the handle provides a firmer hold.

An addition regarding removable fastenings: There are also hook-and-loop systems with strong adhesive that can hold handles, especially lighter handles made of plastic or wood. However, the load capacity should be carefully examined, as slipping may occur with frequent use. This option can be installed without tools and is visually unobtrusive.

Regarding adhesive or magnetic methods: For both options, pay attention to the door surface. The film coating on Besta doors is not always ideal for strong adhesives or metal contact. You might lightly sand the area to improve adhesion. However, be careful not to sand too roughly, as this could damage the surface. It’s best to test on an inconspicuous spot first.

I have completed similar projects before. My advice: it’s best to use threaded insert nuts in the door (also known as metal threaded inserts). These can be securely installed into the door’s hollow core and allow for strong external fastening with custom-made handles. It’s a bit more involved but provides a very secure and stable connection.
