Hello,

we bought a house that was built 20 years ago, and at that time no railing was installed on the stairs leading down to the basement. The previous owner wanted to arrange this part of the work themselves but never did, so it was just left as is. I find this visually unappealing and, above all, with our small children, not an option at all.

The staircase itself is white and solid, and now a railing needs to be installed on this masonry stairway. There is also no handrail.

We haven’t really looked into this remodeling work yet. Who would you contact for this – a carpenter? We would prefer a wooden railing for aesthetic reasons rather than something metallic.

Could you tell me what price ranges we should expect for quotes?

My crystal ball says:
Around 350 - 900 € per running meter, depending on the type of wood and design.
There is no upper limit...

Do you understand this including labor time, value-added tax, posts, etc.?

Let’s assume an average of 600 euros; in total, it will be around 5 meters (16 feet) or maybe more... wow, really about 3000 euros for a wooden railing like that???

I’ve mentioned before, we are just learning that a house is a real financial hobby, and everything always ends up costing more than a layperson expects...

What does the stairway descent look like? Is there a photo available?

I would probably install vertical supports made of metal or wood.
