Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Metod wall cabinet set in my kitchen, and unfortunately, some of the doors are warped. The warping makes it difficult to close the doors properly, the gaps look uneven, and overall the appearance is affected. My question is: What is the best way to fix warped IKEA Metod doors without replacing them completely? Are there proven methods or specific procedures that won’t damage the wood or the surface? I have considered whether moisture or incorrect installation might be the cause, but I am specifically looking for tips on how to straighten the doors fairly easily. Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi, I know the problem with warped Metod doors well. Here is a brief guide you can try:
- Remove the door from the cabinet by loosening the hinges.
- Lay the door flat on a level surface, with the back side facing up.
- Carefully check the warp; often it is the edge or one side that has bowed.
- If needed, place a damp cloth on the warped area and gently weigh it down with a heavy object (e.g., a book or baking tray), as long as the surface permits.
- Leave the damp cloth on for several hours (at least 12 hours) to allow the wood to relax slightly.
- After it has dried, you can try gently bending the door back against the warp. Important: don’t use too much force, or the material might break.
Summary: The combination of moisture and weight often produces good results without damaging the paint finish. However, if the doors are severely warped, it may be difficult to fully straighten them.

I would like to add that the cause is often moisture in the material. Metod doors consist of an MDF panel with a foil coating, which can absorb moisture and cause the door leaf to warp.
If you dry the door properly and use Liduta’s method, you reduce the stress in the material. However, you should also check the ambient temperature and humidity of your kitchen to prevent the problem from recurring.
If you have some handyman experience, you can also try to gently straighten the door using a clamp setup, but only very carefully and with suitable padding to avoid pressure marks.

Thanks in advance for these helpful tips!
A brief note about my situation: I have already removed the doors and noticed that the warping is mostly horizontal, meaning at the top and bottom edges. It looks like the middle is slightly bowed outward. It’s hard for me to tell if moisture is the cause; there are no visible water stains, but unfortunately, the kitchen tends to be quite humid.
When placing the doors on a flat surface to weigh them down, should the laminated side face up or down? I’m concerned that the laminate coating might get damaged if it becomes damp.

Should the doors be placed with the foil side facing down or up on a flat surface when weights are applied?Place the doors with the foil coating facing down, meaning the backside facing up. This prevents pressure marks on the visible side. The backside is usually less visible, so any marks caused by the damp cloth or weights are not a concern.
Be sure to use a clean, slightly damp cloth that is not dripping wet, to avoid softening the foil. A cotton cloth or microfiber dampened with a small amount of water works best.
If the door bends backward in the middle, you can also test placing a light cushion under the center to better distribute the pressure.
