I am currently planning my new kitchen using the Ikea Metod system and wondering how to set it up as ergonomically as possible. My focus is not only on the classic kitchen work triangle between the stove, sink, and refrigerator, but especially on the correct height of the countertops, the optimal layout of the cabinets, and practical interior fittings that facilitate workflow and help prevent back pain. What recommendations are there specifically for the Metod modules to ensure comfortable and efficient work while cooking and washing up? I am also interested in whether it makes more sense to choose taller wall cabinets or to install more base cabinets with pull-out drawers. I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Basically, when designing an ergonomic kitchen, it is important to carefully consider the dimensions and your own height before furnishing. For the Ikea Metod system, I recommend the following setup:

- Worktop height: Ideally 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) below the elbow tip, so you can work comfortably without bending too much. Metod offers worktops in standard heights, but individual adjustments are possible using different legs.
- Base cabinets with pull-outs are often more practical than drawers or doors because they make access to the interior easier and help protect your back.
- Wall cabinets should not be hung too high – a distance of 50-55 cm (20-22 inches) from the worktop is sensible so you can reach everything easily.

To avoid planning mistakes: cabinets that are too high or work surfaces that are too low often cause discomfort. Also consider the sequence of work zones and the walking distance between stove, sink, and refrigerator.

Ergonomics in the kitchen mainly depend on correct measurements and functional layout. For Metod cabinets, the following guidelines apply:

- Countertop height ideally 90 cm (35 inches) for a person between 170-180 cm (5 ft 7 in - 5 ft 11 in) tall, adjust according to individual height.
- Work surface depth at least 60 cm (24 inches) to provide enough space.
- Base cabinets with full-extension drawers are highly recommended to maximize storage and ease access.
- Wall cabinets should not be too large, as they can obstruct sightlines and make working more difficult.

It is also important to plan sufficient clearance space: at least 120 cm (47 inches) between an island and a wall to maintain easy access to cooking and cleaning areas.

Set the countertop at elbow height, use pull-out drawers instead of hinged doors, and avoid hanging upper cabinets too deep. This way, the Ikea Metod kitchen can be set up ergonomically.

An ergonomic design concept for the Metod kitchen should always take workflows into account: storing heavy items in lower cabinets, and frequently used utensils in easily accessible drawers. I recommend not seeing the work triangle concept as dogma but rather adapting it precisely to individual kitchen usage habits.

Along these lines, it is also helpful to store items like spices and cooking spoons next to the stove. Upper cabinets can be given slightly less space, while creating more storage in drawers instead, which reduces strain on posture.

That sounds interesting – I actually cook quite little but work a lot with fresh ingredients that need preparation. Do you think it would make sense to plan for more space around the sink and the adjacent countertop rather than around the stove? What has been your experience specifically with the Metod modules?
