Hello everyone,
I recently got an IKEA Metod kitchen with wooden countertops and am wondering how to care for them best to maintain both their appearance and durability over time. I am especially interested in suitable cleaning products that can be used safely, as well as tips to prevent scratches, water stains, or discoloration.
It would also be great to know if there are specific maintenance routines that should be applied regularly, or if the care can be kept minimal.
I don’t want to make any mistakes since wood is quite sensitive, and unfortunately, IKEA only provides rather general guidance in the manual. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

And don’t worry about scratches – wood is a living material, and small signs of use add to its charm! 🙂I have to disagree here. If you consider your wooden kitchen as a valuable piece of furniture, you should definitely try to minimize these signs of wear. Otherwise, after a short time, you’ll end up with a heavily worn surface that looks really distressed.
A protective finish is a good idea; it saves a lot of effort and offers better protection against moisture and stains. The appearance hardly suffers if applied correctly – the myth that the wood is 'sealed' and looks unnatural is often exaggerated.
I would like to contribute here as well, since I also have a Metod wooden countertop and find the topic of maintenance very important.
As a basis, you should know that wooden countertops are made of solid wood and therefore need to be treated in the same way as wooden furniture.
My tips:
- Avoid leaving the countertop standing wet, and do not leave wet sponges on it.
- After cleaning, it is best to dry the countertop with a soft, dry cloth.
- For maintenance, I use a care oil that I apply every 6 months. Before applying, lightly sand the surface (fine sandpaper) so the oil can penetrate better.
It is also important to choose a food-safe oil, since the countertop comes into contact with food.
I would also like to know how large your countertop is and whether it is strongly affected by direct sunlight, as this can also play a role.

Hello Lispi,
to start from the beginning again: woodworking and wood care always focus on protecting against moisture and mechanical wear.
My recommendations for caring for your IKEA METOD wooden countertop:
- Daily cleaning with a damp, soft cloth and mild dish soap, then drying thoroughly.
- Avoid harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the surface finish.
- Every 6-12 months, lightly sand the countertop and then treat it with special wood oil (preferably from IKEA or a specialist wood supplier).
- Minor scratches can be repaired well by sanding and re-oiling.
- Also, avoid placing hot pots directly on the wood surface to prevent discoloration.
If you like, I can provide more detailed advice on specific cleaning products.

What do you think about applying a protective varnish as an additional layer? I’ve read that some people do this, especially for kitchens with heavy use. From a practical and wood technology perspective, you’re opting for a double protective layer, which seems quite reasonable. However, you should make sure whether the countertop already has a varnish sealant — an additional layer can cause tension, lead to cracks, or alter the character of the wood.

A protective varnish is not a bad idea, it saves a lot of maintenance work and offers better protection against moisture and stains.I agree with this point but would like to add that varnish can be seen as a drawback by some because it alters the natural appearance and feel of the wood. It remains a balance between maintenance effort and aesthetic preferences.
Hello everyone,
I think it’s great that so much helpful information is coming together here. However, I also want to mention that wooden veneer panels are very accessible at IKEA, but sometimes it feels like the care instructions are too general and not really tailored for everyday use in a heavily used kitchen.
If you’re worried that the maintenance might be too time-consuming, don’t be discouraged! In my experience, regular oiling, maybe once a month, can make a big difference. It makes the surface more durable, drastically reduces water stains, and helps the wood age more beautifully.
By the way, IKEA also offers special care kits designed specifically for this purpose. If you have any questions or uncertainties, I’m happy to help. Caring for wood doesn’t have to be stressful!
