Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and after assembling it, I noticed that the doors do not open properly. Specifically, the doors get stuck at one point when opening, although the hinges appear to be installed correctly. The gap between the door and the bookcase is uneven, which seems to be the cause.

I have already tried realigning the doors, but so far without success. It feels as if either the hinges don’t fit perfectly or the wood is warped.

Has anyone had experience with how to correctly adjust the doors so they open and close smoothly? Are there any tips on which screws to tighten or loosen, or special tricks during assembly?

I would really appreciate any helpful advice!

Hello Esmaeilsi,

Such issues often occur due to uneven hinge adjustments. In BILLY shelves, the hinges usually have several adjustment screws:

1. Screw for horizontal adjustment
2. Screw for vertical adjustment
3. Screw for depth adjustment

My advice is to first remove the door completely and check that all hinges are firmly secured. Then, using a Phillips screwdriver, gradually adjust the screws until the door aligns flush with the cabinet body and opens smoothly without resistance.

Sometimes it also helps to hang the door slightly at an angle and then adjust the screws so it doesn’t hit the frame. If the wood is warped, this can require extra effort, but usually adjusting the hinges is enough.

If you want, I can also provide you with a step-by-step guide.

Check if the fittings are installed in the correct position. Often, the hinge screws are just loose, causing the door to hang crookedly. Tighten the screws securely, and this should usually resolve the issue.

I can only agree with Tommy38. I also experienced issues with my BILLY shelves where the doors would stick if not adjusted properly.

My approach was always:

- Remove the door
- Loosen all the screws on the hinges
- Rehang the door
- Adjust the hinges and tighten the screws again

It is important to only turn the screws slightly at a time and test how the door behaves in between. This helps avoid over-tightening, which could make the problem worse.

If the doors still stick, the door hinges themselves might be damaged, which is rare but can happen.

Check the door to ensure it is installed correctly.

Tighten or loosen the hinges, depending on whether the door sticks or has gaps.

Inspect the clearance gaps.

An interesting point that is not often mentioned here: The floor or the wall can affect the shelving unit. If the BILLY shelf is not perfectly level—due to an uneven floor or wall irregularities—the forces can shift, which may cause the doors to get stuck.

Have you checked if the shelf is truly level? Maybe you can level the base with small shims or furniture wedges to solve the problem.
