We actually don’t like them. We find them terrible. But there are reasons for this. At the moment, we have a hedge, Portuguese laurel. We simply don’t find the time to trim it, etc. Every year it gets powdery mildew and a special type of beetle whose larvae damage the roots during winter/spring. We can’t spray because there is an 8 meter (26 feet) long pond with about 30 goldfish/shubunkins and four koi carp right next to the hedge.
Since we absolutely want privacy screening, there are only three options. Hedge? We don’t want that because of the experience mentioned above. Welded wire fence? We don’t like it, not at all. Stylish privacy screen? Insanely expensive.
So you’re right, the money is a dilemma. But it has nothing to do with jealousy.

I also don’t get the strong dislike some have. I’d say... for many, the welded wire panel fence would be the lesser evil in my opinion (Not referring to you, @gmt94)

According to our quotes, about 50-60% less than, for example, a continuous WPC privacy screen at 1.80m (5.9 ft) height.

I pay €55 per linear meter for 1.40m (55 inches) height. 100 linear meters including a gate (4m / 13 ft), two doors (1m / 3 ft and 1.25m / 4 ft) cost €8,300 including VAT.
