ᐅ Should the garage be aligned flush with the house or set back?

Hello forum,
I am currently considering whether to build a garage flush with the house or set it back towards the garden. Building it flush would create a more compact structure and allow for more space in the "small" garden. Setting it back towards the garden would provide more privacy on the terrace but reduce the garden area somewhat.
Are there any general opinions on this?

What exactly is a standard house with standard dimensions? A standard example would be the Flair model from Town & Country or the Alto series from Heinz von Heiden. The base dimensions are about 9x10 meters (30x33 feet) or similar. Or a city villa sized around 9x9 meters (30x30 feet) or 10x10 meters (33x33 feet).

Is that standardized anywhere? No, not really. But in the housing sector, standardization refers to designs that are compact, therefore affordable and energy-efficient, easy to build, and functional and affordable for a family of four. These designs don’t stand out with special features but appeal to a broad target group. Because of standardization, the house is often pre-planned and sold as a type house. Usually, modular elements are offered for customization. For example, Heinz von Heiden often extends the house lengthwise at the gable end; with the Flair model, you can simply mirror half of the layout. This avoids changing the structural engineering, and the mason and carpenter can build the house almost without detailed plans.
A 9-meter-wide (30 feet) house allows for two rooms that can usually be furnished comfortably: a standard wardrobe is 60 cm (24 inches) deep, and a mattress is 2 meters (79 inches) long, fitting into a 2.2-meter (87 inches) bed frame. A simple standard master bedroom can fit a 3-meter-long (118 inches) wardrobe and a double bed about 1.8 to 2.0 meters wide by 2.1 meters long (71 to 79 by 83 inches). So, a room size of 3x4 meters (10x13 feet) can accommodate most average needs. Although many believe that 10 square meters (108 square feet) is enough, and under 15 square meters (161 square feet) is too small, 12 square meters (129 square feet) is considered the standard room size.
This standard house format fits well on flat plots, which are often subdivided by municipalities into approximately 20-meter-wide (66 feet) lots. Many districts have minimum plot sizes for single-family houses—for example, 650 square meters (7,000 square feet) in our area. So, you could say most type houses fit these ideal dimensions of 20x30 meters (66x98 feet). A 140-square-meter (1,507 square feet) bungalow might already be tight in width on a 20-meter-wide (66 feet) lot.
If the house is narrower, say 8 meters (26 feet) or less, you may encounter more challenges during design if you only want to stick strictly to the standard and are unwilling to compromise. That means you are moving away from the standard. However, there are narrower type houses as well, because companies adapt to today’s generally smaller standard plots, such as 20x20 meters (66x66 feet) or 16x25 meters (52x82 feet), depending on the region. But then you won’t necessarily have the typical floor plan you get with a 9x10 meter (30x33 feet) house.

hanghaus202310 Aug 2023 10:04If a project — like this one — serves two purposes (garage AND privacy screen), that’s great. However, if this also causes disadvantages (less space), I would build the privacy screen differently. It doesn’t require much space, and there are many options available.
