Hello,

We are planning to install a privacy screen soon on the terrace in front of our semi-detached houses (the left side belongs to my brother, the right side to me).

As you can see, a glass privacy screen is already installed for the two rented upper units.

For the lower level, we intended to use larger Trespa / HPL panels in aluminum gray, mounted on each side of the balcony supports. Approximately 180cm (71 inches) high and about 70cm (28 inches) less deep than the terrace depth (so roughly up to the front support).

In extension of this privacy screen, a double wire mesh fence will be installed on the boundary line next week, which will stand about 120cm (47 inches) above ground level in front of the terrace. A suitable gate is planned near the terrace here. Unfortunately, the space between the front support and the terrace edge is only about 70cm (28 inches), which is too narrow for a proper gate. The fence itself is mainly intended to keep the neighbor’s dog on the ground floor contained, not as a privacy screen. Relevant plants will be planted partially for privacy.

Current delivery times and prices for Trespa or HPL from other suppliers now have us considering alternatives 😕

To illustrate, two pictures show the current condition and the planned privacy screen.

Stone (masonry / gabions) could be an option for us, but it probably wouldn’t be cheaper.

Wood (double-sided rhombus cladding) including substructure would also not be cheaper and is not desired, as it does not match the house aesthetically.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be installed here as an alternative? The dimensions of the privacy screen would be about 180cm (71 inches) high and 270cm (106 inches) deep.

Hmm, doesn’t this call for glass like the balcony above? If tempered glass is too expensive, maybe acrylic?

I would avoid using gabions, as you would have needed to install the foundations during the construction of the terrace. Also, a gabion that is 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 inches) wide and therefore appears very massive, relying solely on its own weight for stability, is definitely not suitable for the small terrace.

In our previous apartment, we used galvanized square perforated metal sheets, installed in two layers with a small gap and slightly offset. This could be mounted on both sides of the beams (which are in the middle). Two layers provide privacy and reduce the wind pressure compared to a solid wall: at 10 Beaufort wind scale, the pressure is about 50 kg/m² (10 psf), which for your size means a pull force of around 300 kg (660 lbs) on a laminated safety glass wall. That is quite considerable.

Galvanized perforated metal sheets also have an industrial look that would fit well with your house. It would definitely be more affordable than laminated safety glass or gabions. Additionally, it would go well with the planned double wire mesh fence! Perhaps the fence installers can handle this as well; otherwise, a metalworker (fabricator) could do the job.

Wood (both sides covered with rhombus slats), including the substructure, isn’t getting any cheaper, and it’s not desired because it doesn’t visually match the house.

In my opinion, it practically screams for it and would definitely look great and modern on your house! So far, I only see cold and gray materials. Perforated metal sheets would be the cherry on top. Wood would bring a bit of warmth and coziness to the terrace.

No wood was my brother’s preference. But it will be wood after all. Siberian larch as vertical floor/ceiling cladding. Planed boards, then finished with a light gray stain. I checked the material today. It’s still available in small quantities. Running meter in 140mm (5 1/2 inches) width at 5€ is also reasonable.

Unless other factors come into play, this will remain the plan. Simple trellis supports, etc., can then easily be attached.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed ideas. Especially the suggestion to bring some warmth into the design with wood is a good inspiration.

I’d say, leave the separation out for now… he’s your brother after all…
