Hello dear forum,

we are currently planning to build a terrace accessible from our kitchen and wanted to ask for your opinion on our idea. We want to remove the window and replace it with a balcony/terrace door. For this, the masonry under the window will need to be removed.

For the terrace, we plan to build a U-shaped frame around with formwork blocks and then fill it with concrete and reinforcing steel. The inside will be filled with construction debris and all the asphalt we want to remove from our driveway, which we will compact thoroughly. This should fill the terrace properly.

On top, we will add a layer of concrete with reinforcing steel, and then depending on the finish, either tiles or terrace slabs.

Has anyone done something similar? Did you face any problems afterwards, or were you satisfied with the result? Here is a picture for illustration.

Best regards and stay healthy

Yes, this is my house, and it is a semi-detached house. The structural engineering was taken into account. We had planned the driveway but then put it on hold due to COVID-19, etc. Has no one here ever done something similar? Several contractors say that this project can be carried out without any concerns. And this terrace is not going to be removed either—such a terrace really just adds to the quality of life.

This is definitely doable, but instead of using tons of material here, I would rather build something with wood or WPC on a few pier foundations.

Is there a basement window underneath? Then you would also need to install a basement well.

I’m not sure if raising the terrace might affect the neighbor’s privacy. At least in that case, the privacy fence would make little sense.

Yes, that is a basement window. We wanted to fully close it off because the basement room is only used for storage and therefore doesn’t have much practical use.

Exactly, the idea of using WPC decking was originally mine, but isn’t something made of concrete generally more stable and durable? I mean, of course there are great things you can do with wood, but it can also get damaged more easily.

We would remove the privacy screen at the spot where the terrace will be located and either build a stone wall on the terrace or, if necessary, reinstall the privacy screen, as we do not want the neighbor to see what we are doing on our terrace.

Do terraces not have to comply with the building boundary? Do you already have approval from the neighbor?
